Hodgson provides practical advice on introducing children to the joys of nature. Throughout, he stresses the importance of having fun by making outings an adventure and including children in the entire trip process. The topics covered include equipment, planning, cross-country skiing, canoeing, and biking. Especially valuable are the sections on first aid/safety and survival/emergencies. Each chapter ends with a list of tips for quick reference. The appendixes have a checklist, a recommended reading list, equipment suppliers with addresses, and a list of useful places to write for information about destinations. Patrons may need more specific materials for learning skills, but this book is a fine overview and is especially good for reminding adults of the pleasures of seeing the world through children's eyes.
