Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
Wendy’s friend, Will, is moving to Australia. Keeping in touch used to be the stuff of email and phone calls. Wendy, however, proposes building a class website so Will can stay updated in real time. With the help of their computer lab teacher, Will and Wendy use a template to design a website that includes an area for photos and posts. When Will arrives in Australia, he is able to see photos of his friends and read all the class news. The book’s simplified content includes words printed in bold that are defined in a short glossary (six words) at the end. The text is supported by brightly colored, simple illustrations in a graphic style that uses outlined figures and flat colors. Drawings of screen images illustrate a browser window, elements of a design template, and a sample posting. The text emphasizes the importance of writing well for the web, as for any creative writing. It also recommends that children work under adult supervision and practice safe Internet browsing and posting. Part of the “Writing Builders” series, this book concludes with a set of questions to help students decide on the purpose of a website, a glossary, a list of books and websites titled “For More Information,” and a note about the author. Bailer’s book would be a good addition to an upper elementary school library or class on the basics of building a website and the importance of using safe practices when working with the Internet. Reviewer: Hazel Buys; Ages 8 to 14.
