Will Rogers grew up in the late 1800s riding horses and roping cattle. While working on the family ranch, he developed an exceptional roping ability, and the attention it gained sparked his career in show business. After adding jokes to his roping act, Rogers' popularity soared, and he began to perform all over the country. Known by his down-to-earth personality and witty sense of humor, Rogers became a star of stage, film, and radio.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
Born and raised in Indian Territory—what later became northeastern Oklahoma—Will Rogers was one quarter Cherokee, the eighth child born to parents who were part Irish, German/Dutch, and Scottish. Gaining his sociability and humor from his mother, and his cowboy skills from his father, Will loved riding his horse and taught himself throughout his early life how to rope everything from a cow to a whole baseball team. Motherless at 11, he ran away from boarding school when he was 18 to become a cattle driver in Texas. When ranching was no longer exciting enough, he pursued the cowboy life in South America, Africa—where he also appeared in his first "Wild West" show—Australia, and New Zealand before returning to the United States. An adventurer until his tragic early death in a plane crash in Alaska, Will Rogers became one of the best loved stage and movie actors, radio personalities, and newspaper columnists in America. This account documents not only the life of Will Rogers, but also the evolution of the entertainment and media industries at the turn of the 19th—20th century. Like many of the wonderfully produced "Signature Lives" series, this is an excellent combination of accessible reading level supplemented with wonderful photographs, an illustrated timeline, recommended reading and websites, small glossary, source notes for text and images, and an index. Through his travel, movies, and writing, he was connected to the world beyond the United States and so this book can pique readers' interest in worldwide events, as well as communication and technology innovations of the time period.
