Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Partridge
Fresh, breezy and loaded with star facts, this book has the low-down on one of the decade's most popular actor and rapper, Will Smith. Tracing his filmography, discography, and personal journey to the top, there are a plethora of photographs to enjoy on every page, some even taking up two page spreads. Smith has so many admirable qualities. Besides being incredibly hard working, naturally funny and very talented, he's got good moral standards, and he's definitely not boring! Written in an easy-to-read fast paced style that reads like a teen magazine, there are lots of personal details here for star-struck fans to pour over. This is a monthly installation of the series Scene, a celebrity resource for young people.
VOYA - Sue Krumbein
Actor/rapper Will Smith's face is familiar to a wide variety of people. Fans of the TV show Fresh Prince, people who enjoyed the movie Men in Black, and those who know him as a rapper all recognize the handsome face, genuine smile, and even the big ears. While these two biographies of Will Smith serve different purposes, both will be popular with young readers. Stern's book, part of the Scene series, reads like a magazine. This oversize paperback includes big colorful photos, quotes in page margins, and facts presented in an easy-to-find manner. Its style is well-suited to both the casual reading area and the magazine rack. Students will enjoy looking at it together or by themselves. Stauffer's title, part of the Black Americans of Achievement series, is clearly a biography in format as well as form. It begins with a chapter on the movie Independence Day and then moves to Will's life, starting with his childhood and continuing as his performing career develops. Photographs add interest to the text, and the book has all the helpful features that are so important to a book students will read for research as well as for pleasure. Biographies of individuals currently working in their field are an asset to any library. Though these two books would be used differently, they would both add to a biography collection. The Scene series book should not be left on the shelf for a student to find, but should be displayed with other casual reading material. Note: This review was written and published to address two books. Illus. Photos. VOYA Codes: 3Q 4P M J S (Readable without serious defects; Broad general YA appeal; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12).

It's hard to believe, but it was all the way back in 1988 that Will (then better known as the "Fresh Prince") and his partner Jeff Townes ("DJ JazzyJeff") won the very first rap Grammy award for their song "Parents Just Don't Understand."

Enough to satisfy anyone, especially eighteen-year-old Will, right?

Less than two years later Will left the music world for the acting world and the TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But he wasn't about to stop there. While the show was becoming a smash hit, Will used his spare time to take on supporting roles in such movies as Where the Day Takes You, Made in America, and Six Degrees of Separation.

Was Will satisfied yet? Nah, far from it. He then tackled his first starring role in Bad Boys, an action thriller that took in over $138 million at the box office.

But he was still just getting warmed up.

Will's next movie was 1996's Independence Day, one of the top-grossing films of all time. A year later he followed up with another sci-fi megabit, Men in Black.

You could say that Will was on a roll. You could also say that he had become a superstar. A major superstar.

It was then that Will returned to music. And in typical Will Smith fashion, he didn't let his fans down. His first solo record, 1997's Big Willie Style, earned him yet another Grammy.

Will Smith is living life as large as it gets. Everything he touches seems to turn to gold, How do people explain his phenomenal popularity?

"Will's funny, self-confident...good-looking...[He's got) that movie star thing going," says Barry Sonnenfeld, the director of Men in Black.

Will has a different answer.

"It's the ears," he says, smiling.

"Americans have an car fetish. Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Ross Perot -- they love people with big ears."

Well...maybe. But Will has some other qualities that might better explain his success. For one, he's a pleasure to work with.

"I never want to do a movie without Will Smith again," says Sonnenfeld.

For another, he works harder than anyone else.

"No one else is going to put in the hours I put in, "Will says. I have this really psychotic drive. I can't sleep, I can't eat until what I start is finished to the best of my ability."

Where did such a hardworking, good-natured, old-fashioned kind of nice guy come from?

The short answer is Philadelphia.

But if you really want to find Will Smith's roots, you have to look at his role models. His heroes.

His mom and dad.

"The only people I ever idolized."
