VOYA - Margaret Capobianco
This new "African-American Icons" series of African-Amercian reference books selects a distinct group of high-profile personalities about which to provide biographical information. Each volume is written by a different author (with the exception of Michael Schulman) and is perfect for middle school students looking to expand their knowledge of famous and current African-American personalities. Each volume details the struggles and obstacles the person overcame to become an immensely successful star in their own right. For example, Toni Morrison was a single mother to two young children but was determined to be independent, making her a wonderful role model for young adults. Oprah Winfrey grew up impoverished but became a television reporter at age nineteen. The theme that resonated with each biography is the sheer force of determination and hard work each individual demonstrated to make sure their dreams came true. The series will make a great addition to a public or school library. It is resourceful and informative. Pictures would have been helpful in these volumes, as children and young adults use them in reports, and pictures add interest to a biography. Each book does contain, however, a very useful chronology of important events which young readers will enjoy. (African-American Icons) Reviewer: Margaret Capobianco
