Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
Sam Watson enters the contest for a new advice columnist for the school paper. He does this mostly to annoy his feminist, vegetarian big sister, who insists that boys couldn't possibly give good advice. Once he has the job, however, he finds himself dealing with problems he never expected. How can he give advice about makeup? Or puberty? He delves into the books at the library, careful to hide his true intents so his buddies don't suspect that he is the new Ms. X. One letter he receives troubles him-a student suspects his parents are about to divorce. Sam is even more troubled by this letter once he realizes that his best friend wrote it. Many of the issues raised in the story are resolved a little too easily (everyone pairs off for the school dance, for example), but the worries and concerns are realistic.
