Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The paper-over-board Will You Be My Valenswine? by Teresa Bateman, illus. by Kristina Stephenson, follows Polly, a "pouting pig" with no mate, who looks for love in the wrong places (she asks a rose and a sparrow to be her "one true valenswine"). Then she finds love right where she started-with her mother. Cartoonish watercolors keep the humor in Polly's pursuit. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
It is Valentine's Day, and poor piglet Polly has no valenswine. Moping around the pigpen with a bad case of the grumps, she nearly cries as she tells her mother how she longs for a valenswine. Her wise mother tells her to go out in the fresh air, think about it, and given time she is sure to find someone who loves her and would love to be her valenswine. And so Polly's journey begins. She finds roses twining along the fence, a sparrow singing a beautiful song, and a trough full of slop in the barnyard, but none of them say a word when she asks them to be her valenswine. Dejected and alone, Polly returns to her pigpen to discover that her one true valenswine, her mother, was there all along. This is a very predictable tale told in rhyming text, the rhythm of which seems, in places, slightly off, but combining it with the charming illustrations of adorable Polly and her dilemma, make for a nice Valentine's Day read. 2005, Albert Whitman and Company, Ages 3 to 8.
