William Bolcom: Complete Works for Cello

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Mike D. Brownell
Although Bolcom has not composed as extensively for the cello as he has for the violin, the works for cello are similar in that they provide a representative cross section of the composer's styles and approaches to the instrument. Ranging in date from 1961's "Décalage" to the "Suite No. 1 in C minor for Solo Violoncello," listeners are treated to a wide swath of Bolcom's music. Ranging in date from 1961's "Décalage" to the "Suite No. 1 in C minor for Solo Violoncello," listeners are treated to a wide swath of Bolcom's music. Cellist Norman Fischer gives an exceptionally strong and well-informed performance across the board. Fischer, who has worked extensively with Bolcom and premiered many of his works, makes the disclaimer to listeners that there are many errors in the published versions of these works and that by working directly with Bolcom the interpretations heard here represent the composer's true intentions. This album is therefore an absolute necessity for anyone who may be interested in performing these works. Apart from these more technical considerations, Fischer's performances are equally insightful musically, capturing the listener's interest with a powerful yet supple tone, sweeping dynamics, and rich character. Fischer's collaborators -- pianist Jeanne Kierman and timpanist Andrea Moore -- are equally in tune with Fischer's understanding of Bolcom's works and serve to further enhance the quality of this album. Equally valuable as an educational tool, an introduction to Bolcom's works, or as an addition to a collection of cello music, this CD is sure to please.
