Editorial Reviews

Maryland Medical Journal
A well-written biography... [and] a good read... It is basically the background of modern medicine in the United States. It explains the curriculum that physicians encountered in medical school. Most importantly, this 50-year old gem does it with style.

Originally published in 1941; reprinted with a new foreword. Welch died in 1934 at age 84, having founded the country's first pathological laboratory, established a model for medical education at Johns Hopkins, and initiated the country's first school of public health and hygiene, among other accomplishments. He is profiled by two Flexners--Simon, the father, who studied under Welch and went on to contribute substantially to medical knowledge; and James Thomas, an award-winning author. Annotation c.
