Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
The "Pebble Plus Presidential Biographies" series aims to acquaint beginning readers with the lives of our national leaders. Each large book presents a handsome portrait of its subject on the cover, offers a page or two of "Early Life," and a section called "Young Adult." Each ends with a brief summary of the president's accomplishments and a "Remembering" spread for presidents who have died. Clinton's life and presidency were well documented by photographers, so illustrations here are both color and black-and-white photos showing the ambitious Clinton at various stages of his career—images are the best part of this volume. Especially touching is a photo of teenage Clinton shaking hands with President Kennedy. Starting with 1992, color photos show Clinton campaigning for President, being inaugurated, and signing a bill for a balanced budget. The simple text is upbeat but rudimentary—it takes kids at a gallop through marriage, Arkansas politics, the presidency (no mention of scandal), and charity fund-raising after office. It is not easy to evaluate a still-living president; the author does not try, but concludes that Clinton is remembered for improving the nation's economy and that "he has never stopped caring for people." A note to parents and teachers warns that readers will need help. Though a glossary attempts to explain unfamiliar concepts, what can readers in kindergarten or first-grade make of economy or attorney general? Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft

Meet the Author

Sally Lee is the author of numerous nonfiction books for readers from kindergarten through high school. Her interest in children’s literature began at the University of Missouri where she received her degree in education. Her years of teaching gave her desire to help children learn.
When she left the classroom to raise her own son and daughter, writing nonfiction became a way to continue educating children. Her favorite part of writing nonfiction is doing research. It reminds her of a treasure hunt, especially when it uncovers off-beat facts that nobody else knows. It also satisfies her own curiosity about the world. Sally and her husband live in Dallas, Texas, with their children and grandchildren nearby.
