Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: ronald gartenhaus, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: "This is the 6th edition of a reference textbook of both malignant and non-malignant hematology. "
Purpose: The purpose is to provide both a readable yet comprehensive single-volume work. This is a lofty but essential goal of any serious reference textbook. With few exceptions, the book fulfills the author's objectives.
Audience: The book is targeted to the more advanced trainee or subspecialist. The authors are all experts in their respective areas.
Features: This book encompasses the fields of both malignant and non-malignant hematology. The areas of hemostasis and thrombosis are notable for their coverage as well as the generous use of color plates for morphologic descriptions. The shortcomings are few, but a major improvement would be if the author(s) were to present their therapy for a given disorder in the context of "standard" regimens.
Assessment: This is an excellent reference, although it does not outshine the already existent texts in the field. Particularly, Hoffman's Hematology: Basic Principles and Practice, 3rd Edition (W.B. Saunders, 2000), is a serious competitor. Clearly, with the rapid advances in the field of hematology, a later edition is justified.
