Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Gilad A. Gross, MD(Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: This pocket-sized book focusing on pregnancy complications is a companion to the textbook, Williams Obstetrics, 22nd edition (McGraw-Hill, 2005). Readers are referred to the main text for further information on certain topics.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide quick, yet comprehensive information regarding pregnancy-related complications. The manual does not cover the management of uncomplicated pregnancies and delivery. The objectives are nicely met by the authors.
Audience: This book is targeted at and an ideal resource for anyone training to care for obstetric patients. This could include medical and nursing students and obstetrics/gynecology residents. It is small enough to be carried in a pocket, book bag, or tote. It could be useful in a busy clinic setting where quick information is needed in an easily accessible fashion. Those seeking more in-depth information are better served by the main textbook.
Features: The manual covers topics ranging from complications in early pregnancy to the postpartum period. It includes a complete review of medical conditions complicating pregnancy. The wide range of topics covered is the main strength of this book. The fact that it is accomplished in a small and easy to access book is a tribute to the skills of the authors who have been writing textbooks for years. Several helpful appendixes include diagnostic indices in pregnancy, ultrasound tables, radiation dosimetry, and cord blood gas analysis. Tables are used throughout to help synthesize and organize information.
Assessment: "This is a comprehensive review of pregnancy complications in an easy to access format. It provides quick but comprehensive information and is very easy to read. "
