Description: This 26th edition endures as one of the most comprehensive textbooks in the field of obstetrics. Updated from the 25th edition published in 2018, this book expands on its strength as a resource for those managing medical and surgical disorders of pregnancy and has now dedicated additional material to the fetus as a patient. Since the last edition, more than 3,000 new literature citations have been added, as well as hundreds of improved figures, photographs, and images.
Purpose: In an era of an endless supply of online and constantly changing information, this book continues to serve a role as a comprehensive resource to guide practitioners in the care of pregnant individuals. One of the book's strengths is the evidence-based management options in addition to explanations of physiology and treatment fundamentals. The authors cite numerous sources, provide multiple evidence-based options, and include their own practical experiences from what has been one of the largest obstetrical services in the United States for many decades.
Audience: Williams is a precious resource to those who practice clinical obstetrics, from learners to experienced obstetricians. It has been, and remains, a vital text for learners at multiple levels including medical students, midwives, residents, and maternal-fetal medicine fellows. It can also aid specialists and subspecialists who act as consultants for pregnant individuals with non-pregnancy related disorders. The authors are recognized experts in the field and include some of the most clinically experienced obstetricians in the world.
Features: One of the terrific features of this book is that it is not a disconnected collection of chapters. The writing flows among chapters and across the continuum of obstetric care. It includes an overview of timely topics in obstetrics as well as anatomy and physiology. It includes sections related to pregnancy-specific periods and events and maternal and fetal-newborn care. One of its strengths remains management of normal and complicated obstetrics, as well as medical and surgical complications of pregnancy. The discussion of medical and surgical complications is both comprehensive and practical.
Assessment: There are many sources of knowledge and information in contemporary practice. That said, if learners or active practitioners of obstetrics are limited to one text, this 26th edition is the one to have. The senior editors, Dr. Gary Cunningham and the late Dr. Ken Leveno, served for decades in the roles of chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at UT Southwestern and the chief of obstetrics at Parkland Hospital, respectively. They have been involved in the training of more obstetric residents and maternal-fetal medicine fellows, and the care of more pregnant individuals, than anyone in the United States. This suggests that this edition, beyond its current extraordinary usefulness, has historical significance among all editions of the textbook, which remains the gold standard in obstetrics.
