Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: James Aiman, MD (Medical College of Wisconsin)
Description: Since the first edition of Williams Obstetrics was published in 1903, subsequent editions have maintained the tradition of providing a scientific foundation upon which clinical obstetrics is built. The editors have continued this tradition while changing the content to remain current with new knowledge.
Purpose: The purpose is "to provide the reader with a thoroughly scientific basis for understanding obstetrics based upon the most current developments." These are worthy objectives, and this text fills a much needed niche in the library of obstetric texts.
Audience: Anyone who provides care to pregnant women should have this book within arm's length. Apart from such obvious physicians as obstetricians and family physicians, internists, emergency room physicians, and others would find this book useful. The authors are internationally recognized authorities.
Features: The illustrations are of superior quality, especially the half-tone and line drawings. The artistic quality significantly enhances the learning value for the reader. The number of illustrations is appropriate and they are pertinent. The bibliography is extensive, current, and pertinent — a feature that enhances the value of the text. The book is attractive and printed on nonreflective paper in an easily readable type face.
Assessment: The basic outline of the book has evolved but changed little over many editions. The authors continue to provide scientific foundations in obstetrics with practical and relevant clinical details. They have managed to do so while keeping the book a manageable size and weight. Although not integral to the book, the topic supplements published periodically enhance the value of Williams Obstetrics. The twenty-first edition will appear early in the twenty-first century 100 years after the first edition.
