Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A Green Level book in the "Read-It Readers" series, this title focuses on helping younger readers deal with "more complex ideas with an extended vocabulary range and expanded language structures." In this story, Willie the Whale decides to leave home, see the world, and maybe find a new place to call home. He visits a variety of places—the South Pole, New York City, London—and different environments, most notably the desert which he quickly decides is no place for a water-loving mammal. At the end, Willie decides that the best place for him is home in the ocean surrounded by those who already know him. However, he has learned an important lesson about "home." The illustrations in the text are vivid and filled with good humor, as if to encourage younger readers to appreciate Willie's adventurous spirit and good-natured responses to the various places he visits. As with the other books in this series, it does a good job of meeting the mission of the Green Level book. 2002, Picture Book Windows, Ages 5 to 8.
