Once he conceived the concept for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Kinney devoted nearly six years to developing the storyline and artwork. Fashioned as a journal with appealing, expressive stick figure drawings on every page, Diary is narrated in the pitch-perfect (and hilariously deadpan) voice of a not-always-likeable but totally believable tweener named Greg Heffley. Poised to make the painful transition from elementary to middle school, Greg struggles with the usual preteen angst: bullies and cliques, annoying siblings and clueless parents, faithful friends and cute, unattainable girls.
Although Kinney never intended to publish his book online, when the opportunity arose to serialize Greg's adventures on Funbrain.com, he knew he'd found the perfect way to reach his target audience. In 2004, the comic strip began appearing in daily installments on the website. The feature was a huge hit, attracting thousands of hits a day. Moreover, the online version paved the way to Kinney's five-book deal with the publisher Harry N. Abrams.
Armed with fresh, new story lines, Kinney launched the print sequence in 2007. From the very first installment, entitled simply Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the series was a success -- especially with reluctant readers who found the diary-with-doodles format far more accessible than conventional books. Greg, with his hilarious antics, backfiring schemes, and totally unfiltered thoughts (his mom has agreed not to read what he writes!), has struck a responsive chord -- both with kids who identify with his growing pains and with grownups who vividly recall their own.

This is such a great series for kids of all ages. While the writing allows earlier reader to follow along, the humor and wit draws in readers of all ages. An excellent series that has done for reading the same that the Harry Potter series did years ago. If you are a fan of this type of humor, I would also recommend a book called "Did You Ever Wonder..." by Brendan Lynch. I bought it for my son (who didn't like to read anything until the Wimpy Kids series came out) and he brings it back and forth from school to home now! I'm always looking for anything that he'll read. I attached the cover below.

This book is a perfect companion to the movie. My kids loved the movie and so I got them this book. It goes into detail about how the movie was made. It is written in a way that kids will be able to understand it. I got this book with another funny book for my two boys. It is called Pumpkin Guts. Both of these are great books!

We bought our son this book to read on the airplane. He was already reading it a SECOND time when we reached the airport that morning! That's my story & I'm sticking to it!

May not be the best book in the series, but my 3rd grade son loved it, and anything that gets him to read (he's not a huge fan of reading) makes me happy!

If the fact that she has read and re-read this book and keeps it with her much of the time is a positive sign, then this MUST be a GOOD book!!! Jeff Kinney certainly has hit upon a terrific subject and I wish him well in the continuation of this series!!

My son has read all the Wimpy Kid books and has even done the Do It Yourself book, which he and I also recommend. Our family went to see the movie and I laugh so hard that I had tears in my eyes. My son and I have both enjoy the book just as much. It gives you real life situations and I think that is one of the reasons my son has enjoyed the books so much. He can relate to some of the things that happen in the book. I would recommend this book as well has all of the Wimpy Kid books. I have an 11 year old son and 8 year old daughter and they have really enjoyed the Wimpy Kid series.

After reading all the other books, this book tells you how all the characters were created. Starting from notepads full of stories and months of editing to create all the volumes of the book, which finally has been converted to a movie. If you are a big fan, as I, this book is much more than the making of the movie, its the history behind it.
The history of "The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary" is not boring by any means, its hilarious just like the other books!

I bought this for my 9-year old twin grandsons, who had already seen the movie a couple of days earlier. Their verdict was that the book and movie were both "awesome."

Both the movie and the book series has little redemptive value! The main character is consumed by popularity, is unkind to the kids that are his friends, and is only motivated by selfishness. Greg enjoys playing victim all the while bemoaning his lack of status. Not a role model for any child at all! His family is completely disconnected as well. If this is the best we can offer children to get them to read then sadly I'll pass!

This is a good book because it was interesting to find out how they'd make the Wimpy Kid books into the movie version. They did a good job of turning the books into the movie. I liked reading this movie version of those good books. I really enjoyed the illustrations and pictures in this book (like the articles about the principal) because they added detail. It was not a very straight forward story line. The book did not stick to a single story. Too many story lines were told. All in all, it was a sort of good book.
