Overview

This dazzling book of photographs of sailboat cruising and racing by the premier sailing photographer and award-winner, Onne van der Wal.

Onne van der Wal is a world-class maritime photographer whose original body of work is recognized and coveted by boat lovers worldwide. Wind And Water features a variety of photographs that will captivate everyone from the casual boating enthusiast to the experienced Grand Prix racer.

What sets van der Wal's work apart from the rest is its artistic style: whether he climbs atop a 75-foot mast for a bird's-eye view of a sloop cutting through crystal-blue waters or crouches on the deck during a race for a brisk action shot, van der Wal delivers brilliant photographs that capture the harmonious experience of being on the water.

The book contains exhilarating shots of intense yacht racing all over the world, from the America's Cup to the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. It also features dramatic photographs of sailboats cruising in exotic destinations such as the Southern Ocean (between Cape Town and New Zealand), the South Pacific, and the Arctic.

Onne van der Wal has won countless awards for his photography and regularly contributes to every major marine publication worldwide. He was born in Holland, raised in South Africa, and lives in Newport, Rhode Island, where he owns a gallery and exhibits his work.

Chapter One

The Maritime Tradition

A love of the sea has been a part of my life since my earliest days growing up in Holland, and an appreciation of the maritime tradition was in my lineage long before I was born. My family has blood thick with sea salt, as both of my grandfathers were men of the sea. One was a lighthouse keeper on a small island off the south coast of Holland, and the other spent every minute of his leisure time sailing, fishing, and rowing the country's inland canals.

When I was a young boy I moved to South Africa with my family. My father bought us a small boat so we could explore the lakes and ponds and seek adventure in nature. When I turned fourteen, I worked on large commercial fishing boats that docked nearby in the seaport village of Hout Bay. Spending long weekend days on the water with old salts and exploring on our little sailboat furthered the passion for the sea that my grandfathers had ingrained in me. As I grew up I spent as much time as I could helping to maintain other people's boats just so I could spend time listening to their sea tales and stories of racing. At night, I dreamt of sailing across oceans. During this time I learned that the history and traditions of boating were a major part of the experience of being on the water, and I hoped toone day contribute to that tradition.

All sailors have a deep respect for the customs that preceded them. It is something I am teaching my children about now, and it is something I am more and more in awe of. It is easy to see the influence of the maritime tradition when looking at a collection of photographs such as this one. These photographs never lose their relevance, and they hold a certain dignity that speaks to us.

I ordered 2 of these books this past week, one for myself and on

I ordered 2 of these books this past week, one for myself and one for a friend as a gift. The book itself is nice... it is pretty much what I expected (go to the photographers website to see examples of his work... this will give you an idea of what is in the book).

As far as Barnes and Nobles method of shipment, I give them less than 1/2 star. These books are relatively large and the box used to ship them was too small to actually fit the books. So what do they do? They cram the books in, wich expanded the sides of the box. During shipment the box was crushed from the top and actually ripped fully apart at two corners of the box (the fact that the book was pushing the smaller box outwards made this easy to happen). So you can imagine when the box was finally delivered, anyone could see right into the box without much effort. Also, because of their poor packing technique, both books had significat damage to the binding and to the cover. The top corner of each book had been crushed and the covers had significant damage to them including small tears. You would think that a company whose main purpose is to ship books to people would actually have the correct size boxes on hand to ship their products properly.
