Overview

Now here's a curiosity. The LaserLight imprint of Delta Music, Inc., has licensed Judy Collins' recordings for the Gold Castle Records label, originally released in the U.S. on the albums Trust Your Heart (1987) and Sanity and Grace (1989), and issued them on two identically titled albums, both called Wind Beneath My Wings, with some overlapping tracks. The has been forced to employ the subtitles "Laserlight #1" and "Laserlight #2" to distinguish them. Wind Beneath My Wings [Laserlight #2] is actually nothing more than a re-sequenced version of Sanity and Grace, a nine-track live album recorded in Tarrytown, NY, on June 10, 1988. Wind Beneath My Wings [Laserlight #1, on the other hand, contains four of those same tracks: the title song; a cover of Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle"; a re-recording of the traditional song "Pretty Polly," first heard on Collins' 1968 album Who Knows Where the Time Goes; and a cover of Julie Gold's "From a Distance." (Of course, since 1988, both "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "From a Distance" have gone on to become hits and signature songs for Bette Midler.) The other five songs on Laserlight #1 were on Trust Your Heart, which was, itself, a compilation album, with seven of its ten songs drawn from a U.K.-only 1985 album of inspirational material called Amazing Grace. The tracks here from that disc are the Walt Disney children's song "When You Wish Upon a Star"; "Day by Day" from the musical Godspell; a cover of Amanda McBroom's "The Rose" (oddly enough, yet another song associated with Bette Midler); and a re-recording of Collins' early-'70s hit "Amazing Grace." Finally, there is the title song from Trust Your Heart, a life-affirming original composition. Leaving aside the marketing peculiarities, Wind Beneath My Wings [Laserlight #1] is a well-performed set of Collins' mid-'80s recordings that also functions as a sort of "Judy Sings Bette" album.
