Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The child's face on the cover can either smile at you or offer a frown. Part of the "Pick & Choose" series, these board books have a face that can be turned on each page. The questions posed range from "Does Chen like sitting in the water?" to "Did Joy make a snowman?" The theme is weather throughout the various seasons and what kids wear and do in the rain, sun or snow. Depending on the child's mood or desire just to have fun, the frowns and smiles can easily flip. They seem to be secured fairly well and they are easy to turn. The toddlers are simply drawn without excessive detail relating to them or their surroundings. The children have dots for eyes and just a line for the smile or frown. Kids should be able to identify with at least one of the characters since they are different sexes and represent a variety of ethnic groups. The book should empower kids and also be useful if they are not talking—it can serve as a way of communicating. Other books in the series include Bed or Bath?, Carrots or Peas?, and Teddy or Train?
