Ziva, pup of a sled dog, is born with one brown and one blue eye, which the mushers say makes her half-wild. She is never chosen to be a sled dog; she is "wind-wild." A Man takes her home and patiently trains her. Still, she seems to want to run wild when she hears the "song of wolves" calling her. Finally, she is joined to the sled team. One night out in the snow as the wind and a wolf howl, Ziva is free to run. When she encounters a wolf, she realizes that she misses the Man. Tears are in his eyes as he welcomes her back. Joosse's text is rich with emotion and vivid descriptions of the cold landscape of the Alaskan winter. The cover under the more traditional jacket sets the stage for the emotional story with a close-up of a blue eye on the front and a brown eye on the back and no words at all. Kiesler uses oil paint to create sculptural forms that make us sense Ziva's desire to run, to tug against a weight. It is appropriate for her impressions of the snowy landscape, clumps of evergreens, and the star-studded sky. Notes add information on the background of the story.

Mushers believe that eyes of different colors make a dog half wild, and this is true of Ziva. As her siblings are chosen for sled teams, she is left alone, becoming ever more drawn to the wild. One day, a man arrives who takes a liking to her and knows how to treat her. In time, she learns to trust him and to run with a team. While out on the trail, he gives her the chance to go free. Tearing through the moonlit snow, she chases a rabbit and encounters a wolf. But ultimately, she chooses to return to the man who has treated her so well. The story is told simply and clearly. Although Joosse describes strong feelings, she never indulges in sentimentality. While the characters' faces are not depicted in great detail, the oil paintings convey emotions and energy through body language. The effect is powerful. The text and artwork believably convey Ziva's perspective. Superstitious sled-dog owners shy away from Ziva, believing two-color eyes equal wildness. But one Man takes a shine to Ziva, wooing her with patience and kindness and training her with steadiness and praise. On nights when the wolf's cry carries on the wind, the Man knows Ziva longs to be free. At the winter solstice, the Man tests Ziva by hitching her with his team of dogs and racing them across the frozen landscape. That night, as the wind howls and the wolf calls, he unchains Ziva and she races into the night to find the wolf. Will Ziva run with the wolves or return to the Man? Realistic oil illustrations in winter blues, tans, whites and greens showcase the growing bond between man and dog. A heartwarming call of the wild for the small set.
