Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
You can find "beginner" Windows Vista information anywhere. Where can you find advanced tips that'll make you more productive, and make Vista more fun, more efficient, safer? In Windows Vista Secrets.

Authors Brian Livingston (publisher of WindowsSecrets.com) and Paul Thurrott (Windows SuperSite) are among the world's most respected and independent Windows experts. (Even if they do occasionally drive Microsoft crazy, as when Livingston accused Microsoft of planting spyware.) Together, they reach more than a quarter-million active Windows users -- many of whom tested Vista betas, offered suggestions, and responded to the authors' own tips. This book benefits from the insights of that enormous community.

Some of the authors' tips are big. (How to make the most of search folders, saved searches, and virtual folders to organize and find your information far more efficiently. How to set up notebook presentation settings you can apply with a single click, making it much easier to set up conference room projectors. How to connect to Share Music Libraries, either via Vista or your Xbox 360. Where to find new Sidebar Gadgets.)

Others are tiny, yet elegant. (Internet Explorer 7 keyboard shortcuts that quickly enlarge or shrink web pages by 10 percent. How to make the chess pieces in Chess Titans look even better. Where to get the Web's 20 best free fonts.)

Livingston and Thurrott spend plenty of time on Vista's new security features -- helping you optimize Windows Defender, Vista's firewall, phishing filters, parental controls, and a whole lot more. If you're using one of the professional or enterprise versions of Vista, they cover Bitlocker drive encryption, too. But whatever type of Windows user you are -- home or business -- there's plenty for you here. Bill Camarda, from the February 2007 Read Only

    A reviewer

When I buy a book entitled 'Windows Vista S-E-C-R-E-T-S', I expect just that: SECRETS. And by that I understand advanced and hard to come by tips about OS configuration and tweaking. i.e.: Registry tips, Management console, security and group policies, Shell, network configuration, firewall rules, remote assistance (one of the most frustrating mysteries!), TCP/IPv6, etc. This book is about the OBVIOUS stuff any smart user can find out on his or her own by toying a couple days with the OS. By ¿Networking¿, Mr. Livingston and Mr. Thurrott understand explaining you the ¿intricacies¿ of Internet Explorer 7. And I¿m sure those who look for Vista ¿secrets¿ are eager to find out how to view pictures on their PC. There¿s even a whole chapter dedicated to the GAMES that come with Vista! BRAVO!!...The only cool reference in this book is Powershell. Perhaps this Book should be entitled: ¿Windows Vista secrets for those who haven¿t yet seen Windows Vista¿.
