Overview

The Italians have La Dolce Vita, the French have Joie d’Vivre. What do Americans have? Happy Hour? Miller Time? We need help!

New York Times bestselling author Michael Gelb (How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci) opens our eyes to the remarkable power of wine to tap into our creative potential, awaken our genius, and forge bonds with friends and co-workers. Although there are many excellent guides to wine appreciation, Wine Drinking for Inspired Thinking offers a “whole brain” approach that is unequivocally unique.

• Part 1 provides the practical “left-brain” knowledge readers will need to handle themselves in any wine-related situation.
• Part 2 explores how wine can serve as a catalyst for creativity and “right brain” thought. Gelb takes his readers on a wine-soaked journey through history, introducing them to the greatest wine-related art, music, and architecture.
• In Part 3, readers will be guided step-by-step through a delightful process of bringing family, friends, or colleagues together for “Inspired Thinking” wine parties.

If Wine Drinking for Inspired Thinking could make one promise to its readers, it’s that it will not only improve their enjoyment of wine, but will also enhance their enjoyment of life.

WINE DRINKING FOR INSPIRED THINKING is one of the most practical and useful books about a consumer’s experience in dealing with the subject of wine that I have ever read. There is an enormous amount of terrific, and more importantly, reliable and useful information in this book by Michael Gelb. Highly recommended.”

Your only hope is to go immerse yourself in Michael Gelb’s delightful new book, and discover why the best things in the world to open together are a bottle of wine and your mind.”

Decanter Magazine, January 2011
"Savour wine with the whole brain—that’s the message from Michael J Gelb, author of 11 books on creativity and innovation. He explains how to use your creative right brain to appreciate wine, and also shares his tips on ordering wine, finding the best-value bottles as well as the etiquette of wine tasting. A witty, easy to read and inspiring book for all enthusiasts."

Publishers Weekly
Author and "self-employed creativity consultant" Gelb (How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci) offers a robust but cloying at-home seminar in expanding creativity through wine appreciation. Gelb walks readers through a brief but high-minded education in wine, from training on the sensations and vocabulary involved in tasting, to an "inspired thinking" wine party complete with poetry writing and sharing. Besides tasting, Gelb offers generally useful advice, including tips on toasting, the role of the sommelier, food pairings, and optimum serving temperatures, though digressions on classic paintings and opera run long, while other passages (pairing wine with clothes and unconventional foods like nachos) come across as glib and a bit ridiculous. Poets-in-training with a flair for melodrama will likely get the most out of this passionate guide.

If only I could have his job...

What I learned from Gelb's book is that i WANT HIS JOB!! I can bring people together and make a party out of nothing..I can guide people's attention ...I can do this!! And I like his literary references and historical references. I'll read it again before I set out to the North Fork Adventure (LI)for 2010. And I'll ask the others to read it too. Maybe we can elevate this annual adventure to a new and higher plane!

How to DRINK Like Leonardo da Vinci!

As a long-time fan of Michael J. Gelb's international bestseller HOW TO THINK LIKE LEONARDO DA VINCI, I looked forward to the release of this book. In some ways, it picks up where that one left off and takes you on a journey through the world's cultural history through the lens of wine.

The book is organized into four parts:

Part I: Navigating Through the "Wine-Dark Sea," which covers the art of tasting along with mastering "wine lists, sommeliers, snobs, corks and etiquette" as well as wine buying, and pairing food and wine.

Part II: The Elixir of Genius, which covers wine as the lifeblood of civilization and the "three great confluences of wine and genius" along with the art of wine.

Part III: The New Symposium, which covers the Wine Drinking for Inspired Thinking exercise along with winners of the author's previous wine poetry exercises.

Part IV: The Finish, which provides a comprehensive listing of the best resources for learning more about wine as well as a "wine geek jargon guide."

This book would make a great gift for more cultured and/or fun-loving wine lovers, and I am planning to buy copies for all the wine lovers I know!
