With James Lawther (see above), Lewin (What Price Bordeaux?) is one of only 280 masters of wine (MW). Although more academic than Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential—call it judicious exposé—Lewin's book requires no formal wine background, but it's questionable whether one would be drawn to it otherwise. It begins like a college-level course on wine history, production, business, geography, and culture, then tackles popular (and more esoteric) misconceptions, arming readers of any level to restore sanity to the most wayward and hyperbolic cocktail party conversation. Geek cool—for enthusiasts who enjoy depth (backed by 90 pages of notes).
