Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This exemplary anthology, staffed by a host of award-winning authors, showcases every type of dragon: nature gods and mechanical beasts, intelligent companions, and feral ravagers of the countryside. The two original stories, Holly Black's "Sobek" and Margo Lanagan's "The Miracle Aquilina," are exceptional, as are many of the reprints, such as Anne McCaffrey's Pernese "Weyr Search"; George R. R. Martin's celebrated novella, "The Ice Dragon"; Peter S. Beagle's narrative poem, "Stable of Dragons"; Jane Yolen's Arthurian "The Dragon's Boy"; Naomi Novik's Temeraire tie-in, "In Autumn, a White Dragon Looks Over a Wide River"; Harlan Ellison and Robert Silverberg's urban fantasy collaboration, "The Dragon on the Bookshelf"; and Roger Zelazny's humorous "The George Business." The verbal magic of these stories will reignite draconian passion in even the most jaded fantasy reader. (Aug.)
School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Wings of Fire is a successful book on many levels. It celebrates dragons in all their infinite variety with vigor and enthusiasm, tenderness, and sympathy. The stories range from classic fantasy to science fiction to steampunk, and the contributors represent a who's who of extraordinary talent: Peter S. Beagle, Charles De Lint, Roger Zelazny, Ursula K. Le Guin, Orson Scott Card, and on and on. Two original works by Holly Black and Margo Lanagan are included, along with stories tied to popular series like Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern" and Naomi Novik's "Temeraire." Themes explored include sacrifice, honor, love, betrayal, family, etc. Many of the selections have adult language, violence, and sexual situations. The editors have pulled together an amazing work that does just what a great collection should do—it whets the appetite and makes readers ravenous for more.—Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library

THE LOST TRIBES BOOK 6:PART 4

Jambaro led him up to deep rock stairs and down several tunnels. Clay was starting to think this was a wild-goose chase. What if Glory disovered he was gone? Well, he'd only be gone for a moment. He wanted to see this new tribe. "Jade Mountain's really huge," the IronWing told Clay. "Oh," Clay replied as Jambaro said,"How exactly did you come here?" Jambaro asked. The dark tunnels were huge. Torches blazed on each side as Jambaro's and Clay's shadows passed by the bright light. "How long is this going to take?"Clay's stomach was grumbling and by the time he'd get back to the end of the tunnel, Glory'd be gone searching for him and be awake. "Oh...about an hour or two," the little dragonet replied. "Ok...um...if that's going that long...I better go." "All the way back, I don't think so," the IronWing looked amused. "We're almost there," Jambaro said about half an hour later as they went down a winding stairs that took forever. Clay felt dizzy by the end. "The caves are where these guys..l..." "Jamb! Mom and Dad were worrying sick about you? Where'd you wander off this time?" "THIS PLACE IS SO BORING," Jambaro shouted at the taller IronWing who saw him. Probably his brother. This reminded Clay of Under the Mountain where Kestrel and Dune made life really horrible and full of misery for him, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny. The taller IronWing looked shocked and angry when he looked at Clay. "YOU BROUGHT....A...MUDWING! THERE...THIS IS OUR HOME!" The dragon burst into a fit of anger. "Hero! Please...he's not here to take over our home!" Jambaro insisted. Hero shook his head and said worriedly,"There are still enemies...Jade Mountain has come to crumble in thunder and ice... That's all we IronWings and other dragons called AirWings know of the prophecy!" Clay was surprised and worried for the dragons at the same time. He didn't know about AirWings or...IronWings! Nowhere in the scrolls Under the Mountain said that! "Please...I don't want to get in trouble! This guy wanted to explore and I was pratically wanting to just explore outside of the cave!"Jambaro lied. "Who exactly are you?" Hero pointed his claws at Clay's throat.. "C...cl...ay," Clay answered. Suddenly, there was a noise behind them. "Clay....help.......poisoned..........by..............SandWing!" Glory had a black wound on her wing.
