Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This set of four small Winnie books include Winnie Wakes Up, In and Out, Winnie's Walk, and Winnie's Bedtime. The stories about the adorable St. Bernard and her family are designed for first-time readers—short, funny and easy to read. The simplicity of the witty, full-color illustrations allows little readers to focus on the words on the bottom of each page. The back of each book provides valuable advice for parents/caretakers about "how to make first-time reading easy and fun." For example, look through the pictures together so that your child can see what happens in the story before reading the words, read the first page to your child while placing your finger under each word, give your child time to figure out each new word, and praise your child for correct reading as well as for good tries. A great book set, perfect to boost the confidence of first-time readers. Part of the "Brand New Readers" series. 2000, Candlewick Press, . Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Ute Krappen-Clancy
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Two early readers that introduce Annie, a delightful blonde, blue-eyed toddler, and Winnie, her huge, lovable dog. Each book has four brief stories, told in eight simple sentences running across the bottom of the pages. Winnie's daily activities provide familiar plots as children watch her play with balls and beg to go in and out the door. Each book has directions for parents on "Helping Your Brand-New Reader." The softly colored gouache illustrations are cozy and pleasant. The books are just the right size for small hands and the stories are humorous as well as sequential. They are shorter than Cynthia Rylant's "Henry and Mudge" stories (S & S), although they convey the same droll sense of humor. Popular additions to the easy-reader shelves.-Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
