Overview

Winner of International Automotive Media Gold Award 2010

For all his fame as one of Hollywood’s great actors, a world-class humanitarian, and the proprietor of a natural food empire, the late Paul Newman had another intriguing facet that was less known and perhaps closer to his heart than all the rest of his well-chronicled life.  He was an avid, successful and well respected car racer and team owner.  This book tells that story--from Newman’s racing career, begun in earnest at an age when many race car drivers contemplate retirement; to the partnership he formed in 1983 with Chicago racing entrepreneur and team owner Carl Haas; to the impressive stable of automobiles he owned, from the Porsches and Ferraris to quirkier modified VWs and Volvos.

This is the tale of a life full of passion and skill, of someone who entered the 24 Hours of Daytona at the age of 70 and made his last professional race outing at 82; whose roster of drivers for Newman/Hass reads as a who’s who of open wheel racing; and whose interest in cars extended from the likely suspects to old trucks and new hybrids.  And then there’s the charming pal who, when the incorrigible prankster Robert Redford had a miserably wrecked Ferrari dropped at his front door, returned the favor by having the car, crushed into a cube, delivered to Redford’s living room.  The anecdotes, the races, the cars--all are here, adding up to what for many would be a full life, but for Paul Newman was simply another side of a man of talent, conviction, and enduring spirit.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
When Paul Newman was filming Winning (1969), he and costar Robert Wagner took professional driving lessons. According to Stone (executive editor, Motor Trend magazine), Newman already had a fascination with automobiles, but it was the drivers and consultants associated with the film who fueled his passion for speed. Among Newman's accomplishments listed here are his four Sports Car Club of America titles and his being the oldest driver to post a class win at the 24 hours of Daytona. As an owner, he posted eight Champion Auto Racing Team (CART) titles. Stone includes excellent color photos of cars, crews, and drivers, and heartfelt tributes from Newman's associates in motor sports over the years. The big names include Bobby Rahal, Christian Fittipaldi, and Mario Andretti, who wrote the book's foreword. There's just enough text to tell the story but not get in the way of the photos. A complete list of Newman's races is appended. VERDICT This is an essential read for Newman fans and auto-racing enthusiasts.—Susan Belsky, Oshkosh P.L., WI

Meet the Author

Matt Stone, executive editor of Motor Trend magazine, has been a professional automotive journalist and photographer since 1985. He has authored and photographed several books, including the best-selling 365 Cars You Must Drive and McQueen's Machines, both from MotorBooks. A California native, Stone resides in Glendale.

Preston Lerner, a regular contributor to Automobile Magazine, has written about motorsports for publications ranging from Sports Illustrated to The New York Times Magazine. He's the author of the race car marque history, Scarab, for Motorbooks, and one novel, Fools on the Hill. He also club-races a Spec Miata and Nissan 240SX with the SCCA and NASA.

Mario Andretti is auto racing's definition of Been There, Won That. His professional driving career spanned more than four decades and includes the Formula One driver's title (1978), an Indy 500 win (1969), the Daytona 500 (1967), and four CART/USAC open-wheel racing national championships. Andretti has been called Mr. Versatile, known for driving everything from USAC sprint cars on the dirt to IndyCars, sports racing prototypes, and of course F1. He was Newman Haas Racing's first driver when the team was formed in 1982, raced there for 12 seasons, and is considered one of Paul Newman's closest friends.

    Paul Newman was a WINNER!

This book was a delightful & quick read. I lack objectivity where Paul Newman is concerned and I admit it!
This book not only has some great info in it about Paul Newman and his racing and how he got so involved with it, but the photographs are top notch, many never having been seen before.
He loved cars and he loved racing....and I will always be grateful that his CHAMPS car series came to San Jose several years in a row and I was able to see him and his team WIN BIG and how happy it made him.
    This book made me HAPPY!

    what a life!

Informative book if you know little about his racing life. Got the chance to see Newman race a few times & the book brings back memories of those good times.

This book really shows the passion of this man for the sport of racing.

I gave this book to my husband for Christmas and he loved it. He said that Paul Newman was a racer at heart and this was shown by the authors. They gave a great history of his career on the track and the respect he earned from fellow racers.

Must Read for a Newman fan or Racing fan.

Excellent book, well researched and written. You may learn more about Paul Newman the man in this book than biographies that only cover his acting career. Much of it told through stories from his competitors, comrades, and those who drove or worked for him, you find he was not only talented, but an amazing and generous human being. Quite a talented man, with a grand sense of humor, and a very good race driver. He treated those in the sport equally, the well-known and unknown, with never a bad word against anyone.
