Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Do not look to Mitchell for quick tricks or simple secrets for applying to college. She generally also eschews expensive test preparation courses and professional advisors. Instead Mitchell favors well-organized, careful research tuned to each student's loves and needs. In short, this newly revised and updated book is full of sound, practical, and demanding advice. It covers the basic topics, such as test scores, financial aid application forms, essays, and campus visits and interviews, and provides a monthly time line and a sample checklist for managing the many parts of a college application packet. But the heart of the book is the emphasis that the author places on choice. Mitchell repeatedly insists that college applicants research and choose eight first-choice schools and rigorously avoid growing too attached to any single college. She teaches her readers to act like anthropologists, observing what academic and social life is like on each college campus. The importance of collecting personally significant information about a potential college choice is emphasized over getting attached to the prestige value or some other superficial aspect of a university. She punctures the myth of the "dream school" and persuades readers to take the admission process into their own hands by making their research and applications about themselves instead of about other people's expectations. Mitchell provides a useful guide for students and one that any librarian, high school teacher, or anxious parent should have close at hand. (Revised and updated ed.).
