College counselor Mitchell dissects the harrowing, exhausting, and often overwhelming experience known as the college application process. Divided into three parts and thirteen chapters, the book uses clear and concise language to help college-bound high school students and their parents make the best choices for higher education. The goal here is to help students learn how to present themselves in the best light to college admissions deans through assessing themselves, researching schools, and personalizing the application process. The most challenging of these tasks is self-assessment. Current academic standing, future plans, and extra-curricular interests need to be included in their evaluation. Mitchell offers some thought-provoking and introspective questions that can help students in their self-examination. Although students have most of the responsibility, they are reminded continually to rely on parents, teachers, and guidance counselors to help them with their educational quest. This extremely helpful book provides information for international students and American students living abroad. Financial aid, SAT scores, college essays, campus visits, academic calendars, and admissions lingo are dissected for better understanding. A brief discussion of minorities and diversity issues on campuses is presented in an honest and realistic manner. Useful questionnaires, interviewing tips, and other guidelines are provided to help students narrow their search for the perfect college choices. Mitchell offers parents competent advice on encouraging their teenagers' motivation and independence while guiding them through this stress-inducing rite of passage. Equally important, she encouragesparents to maintain their sense of humor and perspective. Glossary. Illus. Charts. Further Reading. Appendix. Gr 9 Up-While many students believe a stellar academic performance may be needed to charm the admissions dean, the message of this straightforward guide is actually to "personalize the process" as much as possible. Deans are interested in "the numbers," meaning test scores, but second to that is "character and strength of person." Special interests are taken into account. Myths about the importance of test scores are dispelled, or at least put into perspective. Parents are advised not to spend money on expensive private consultants but rather to continue to let their child "practice the cello or collect model World War II tanks." Self-assessment is stressed, and a beginning chapter poses frank questions for readers to ask themselves. The author's strength is in communicating with teenagers in a friendly, conversational style, with anecdotal commentary based on experience. Nitty-gritty details about the application process are included, and there are sections for Americans abroad and international, transfer, and gay students.-Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    What a Disappointment!

After I read this book, all I can think of is: 'What a disappointment!' The title of the book seems very attractive and the blurbs on the back cover and in the front inside pages are convincingly laudatory because the praises were all from top college deans of admissions. However, I was really misled by these blurbs. This book turned out to be astoundingly mediocre. Not worth the money and the reading time. The contents were so rudimentary, generic, and general that I doubt any serious reader who really wants to go to top universities would benefit much. There are no data or specific strategies other than the most elementary and commonsensical. There are tons of other good books around that make this book read even more mediocre. Readers would be much better off reading books by Michelle A. Hernandez, Howard Green, Chuck Hughes, and Katherine Cohen.

    Astondingly Average

This book was pretty much my introduction to the college admissions process. I finished it in an afternoon, and learned virtually nothing. It's all fluff you can pick up from a standard issue high-school guidance counselor for free.

    Hey... it's not PC!

As a college counselor I can't help but be impressed with the deans of admissions who endorsed this easy to read, even funny at times, truth of admissions. JSM certainly tells it like she sees it. Kids and their parents will learn a lot, and open their minds with this book. Rob Keppler, Lexington, MA
