Overview

Winter Day Play! puts the fun back into cold, snowy days for parents and young children. Instead of the same old snow angels, they can try a Layer Up Relay that will get them bundled up fast, Snow Painting with spray bottles filled with food coloring, and making Snow Cream with fresh fallen snow. Kids will delight in building a Japanese Snow Cottage or playing the Native American Snow Snake Game. More than 70 activities will keep kids busy learning, exploring, and having fun all winter long. When it is just too cold to go outside, they'll make Eskimo Yo-Yos, have a Marshmallow Sculpture Contest, or make a Snowflake Mobile. Parents and teachers can surprise kids with a Topsy-Turvy party, a Hawaiian luau, or a Winter Picnic. Whether in a group or by themselves, kids will find things to do inside or outside, wherever they live.

Author Biography: Nancy F. Castaldo is a freelance writer and author of Rainy Day Play!, The Little Hands Nature Book, and Sunny Days & Starry Nights.

Editorial Reviews

Smithsonian
These activities, not merely diversions for the preschool crowd, make for the stuff of childhood memories.
Kids Home Library
This one's a definite must for snow-bound families and teachers.
Today's Parent
This no-frills book is a definite must for snow-bound families.
Children's Literature
Here is a wonderful compilation of things to do and learn. The table of contents breaks up the many entries into groups about snow, animals and holidays and lists books, videos, web sites and festivals. Instructions for activities clearly state when the help of an adult is needed, and sidebars give extra information about things like glycerin and soapstone. The author is a Girl Scout leader, so many of the activities are educational in a highly entertaining way. The page layout is very attractive, with big drawings that appeal and explain the text. The book has a lot of white space and little corner blocks of illustration on each page. There are topics for children of all ages, playing alone or in groups, with or without adults. On the negative side, when paper snowflakes are cut, the product has only four sides instead of the requisite six, and no explanation is offered. There is no index. Otherwise this is a fine, useful book, and a companion to Rainy Day Play! 2001, Chicago Review Press, $13.95. Ages 5 to 12. Reviewer:Candace Deisley

PreS-Gr 3-Whether the snowfall is light or heavy or the day is just so blustery that indoors seems better than out, there is something for children to enjoy among the more than 70 suggestions in this book. Creative possibilities include building a Japanese snow cottage (kamakura), fashioning a snow sculpture, or painting on snow with food coloring. Basic science projects involve observing and studying snowflakes and tracking and measuring snow prints. "Arctic Adventures" explores Inuit culture. Party ideas range from a teddy-bear sleepover to activities for celebrating the Chinese New Year. Recipes are included as well. A potpourri of simple ideas to fill the long winter days.-Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
