Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The tense eighth installment of Knight's Vampire Earth series (a welcome improvement over 2008's Fall with Honor) continues David Valentine's adventures in 2076 as the invading Kurian Order decides to exterminate rebellious Earthlings. The Southern Command authorizes Valentine to wage a guerrilla war with the goal of creating a Kentucky freehold. His ragtag battalion (including some controversial Quisling and alien Grog recruits) must deal first with a power plant outage that blacks out Evansville and Owensboro and then a blizzard and the Kurians' plot to unleash a "ravies" epidemic on the human herd. Knight keeps the conflict interesting but says too little about the inscrutable Kurians, who are "like magicians, always diverting attention from the operating hand." Even readers familiar with the series would welcome a glossary and more background on the various alien races. (July)

    What a Let Down

I could gush forever about E E Knight and his Vampire Earth Series, which is exactly why I was so disappointed by this. Throughout the book there's this constant paranoia on Valentine's part that I had thought was taken care of in Fall With Honor with the discovery of Red Dog's special nature and the murder of his controller. Valentine's suspicions regarding Mantilla and Brother Mark seem to come out of nowhere and, to me, would greatly lessen my interest in their characters if true. But these things wouldn't have been so bad if not for the end, which almost ruins the entire series for me (I'll have to read March in Country before I make up my mind). I understand the Kurian agent in Valentine's command being someone neither he nor the reader would ever expect, but who it turned out to be was just not believable, not without some more exposition on why given within the story, which it's not. Also, I know Valentine is a soft-hearted kind of hero, but his decision regarding the traitor in light of the traitor's crimes was like a punch in the gut.

    H T Reynolds

Overall a pretty good series of books, although E E Knight tends to get bogged down at times with details of the military system. At times the current events with the main character David Valentine seem irrelevant to the overall plot of the book. The action is slow to come but grips you when he finally gets to it. He does a good job of portraying a long grinding military campaign against a strong brutal enemy

A good read if you like the series

This was a good installment to the series. It was not the best of the series but it will keep you entertained and rooting for Valentine to find a way to end the occupation.

I'm looking forward to the next book.

Great book but not the best in the series.

I have read all of E.E. Knights Vampire Earth series and I love them, I find them great and they keep on getting better and better. Winter Duty was good but it was not the best in the series, it took me awhile to get into it and it felt like the book is just there to set up something bigger. All the characters are there that you know and love. Another problem I had with this book is that Knight would bring up something that happened in the past but he didnt talk about it so that you would remember it, It has been a year since I read the last Vampire Earth book and I wouldnt mind if he described what happened when he brings it up. The title didnt really go along with the story but other than that the book is for the fans and is setting something big up.

    Continuing Vampire Earth Story

This series is the engrossing story of David Valentine's battles/struggles against the Kurian Order which controls most of the populated areas of Earth. Headed by aura consuming Kurian masters and enforced by their bloodsucking, virtually indestructible avatars called Reapers, the Kurians feed from the human herd dominating humanity through fear, propaganda and manipulation. The human majority cooperates with the Kurians and many serve these masters in a military, political, administrative and/or religious capacity. These cooperating humans are dubbed Quislings within the Ozark Free Territory in which Valentine was trained and received his initial Lifeweaver augmentation as a 'wolf'. Although related to the Kurians, Lifeweavers don't feed from aura and oppose the practice by enhancing certain human abilities in three categories: the long-ranging human wolves, the infiltrating human cats and the virtually unstoppable human bears. Valentine is the only known human to be enhanced with all three. He's the most dangerous human weapon against the Kurians.

In this installment Valentine is left in Kentucky with quisling recruits and a few holdovers from Southern Command of the Free Ozark Territory. Although he argues for more support with Southern Command, a new conservative administration has decided to consolidate power. He's left in a half-deserted, mock-up fort with half-trained troops of dubious loyalty facing probable Kurian retaliation. This story follows an election by Kentucky clans to either remain neutrally unorganized or become an independent state politically opposed to the Kurians. Valentine provides security for that caucus and is then sent across Kentucky to collect wounded Southern Command forces left behind in the care of allied clans. Meanwhile, a Kurian plot to neutralize Kentucky opposition becomes operative. Although less intense than some of the earlier books, this tale is fast-paced and well-plotted with a surprising conclusion. I recommend it to any series' fan and recommend the entire series to anyone who enjoys action, adventure, morally difficult decisions and a complex, well-developed protagonist.

The latest Vampire Earth novel is an entertaining entry in a terrific saga

In 2076 AD or the ffty-sith year of the Kurian Order, the Kur reside inside heavily fortified fortresses while their Reapers harvest human by drinking blood and transmitting the core essences of the people they kill back to their masters. A rebellion is slowly taking back the land from their reaper occupiers, but in Kentucky, Operation Javelin failed and now only a small regiment led by Major David Valentine control Fort Seng and little else.-----------------

They prove enough to enable the people of Kentucky to vote whether the state should be a free zone or part of the Kurian Order as some of Valentine's former allies prefer. A modern day Bleeding Kansas explodes the state into civil war as the voters choose the free zone option. A preacher and a Kurian realize the Order will not tolerate a free sate inside their realm nor invade a second time; instead the Overlords have chosen Kentucky as an example for rebels with plans to exterminate the state. David and his men leave their refuge try to save the people who were wounded in the failed operation as the Reapers supported by the Moondagger try and destroy the rebels. A blizzard makes things worse for the rebels.--------------

The latest Vampire Earth novel is an entertaining entry in a terrific saga. The action is not-stop filled with setbacks for the heroes as former friends choose to end their revolt with what they believe are a peace in our times solution while the Order selects mass termination. Valentine and his unit prove they are heroes as they risk their lives to overthrow the occupation force even as they are being called by their former partners, obstinate insurgents. The plot contains shockers and twists as E.E. Knight provides a powerful thought provoking suspense thriller that will keep fans up late into the night.----------
