Editorial Reviews

Jennifer Levin
"Loneliness, separation, desire are the leitmotifs or Lev Raphael's novel, which is distinguished by Raphael's handling of grand themes and his exploration of worlds both Jewish and gay, daring himself and his readers to contemplate wholeness.
Jewish Bulletin
"Raphael is a writer of vision like Ralph Ellison and James Baldwin."
Los Angeles Times
"Winter Eyes works so well precisely because it is scaled to intimate human dimensions. Raphael's book resembles a piano sonata, a piece he knows so well that his fingers breathed the music."
Publisher's Weekly
"A strong, affecting coming-of-age novel...In spare and controlled prose, Raphael captures the ambiguity, ambivalence and anger of this singular family...His stringent honesty makes their private anguish and their peculiar solutions compelling."
Ray Olson
"Winter Eyes is one of the most affecting, absorbing, and quietly powerful American coming-of-age novels.
