This is one of my favorite of Arthur Ransome's classic children's books, in spite of the fact that no true sailing takes place in it. As we follow the adventures of the Walkers and Blacketts during the winter vacation, we are introduced to two new characters (Dick and Dorothea) that will become major players in later books. "Winter Holiday" is, in my opinion, the most educational of all Ransome's children's books. Not only do we receive an education in semaphore and flag signals, livestock rescue, and ice house construction, but also in rudimentary ice-boat construction & handling, common-sense winter weather survival, and even a bit of astronomy. All this info given in a most engaging manner, and Ransome thus leads readers to try these skills for themselves. (As an aside, I don't know why the heading for this book is listed as "Vol. 7"; it is actually the fourth in the series.) Highly recommended for all readers aged 9 and up.
