As Thomas searches for answers in the collapsing Crimean state, he must also try to come to terms with the collapse of his former life in San Francisco, and the mistakes he made that led to his own self-exile from America. He allies himself with Liine Virtanen, a beautiful but secretive European Union operative. But is he wary of his feelings for Liine because of the lessons of his past, or because he senses she has something to hide?
As a conflict between Russia, Ukraine and the United States over energy reserves threatens to set the whole region on fire, Thomas must decide who his enemies really are, and whether the story he chases will deliver the redemption he wants, or if it will only get him killed.
Peter Darling was born in New York City and has lived in San Francisco, Utrecht, Copenhagen and most recently Seattle. He rotated through several careers including commercial pilot, web designer, corporate manager and international political journalist. Research for his book "Winter Republic" included several trips to Russia and Ukraine, and a long frontline tour in San Francisco during the dot com bubble. With the exception of a few obvious inventions in the story (among them, the Republic of Crimea), he tried to get most of the details right.
