Winter Solstice on Ice

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
This recording is the musical companion to the A&E television special that features some of the world's top skaters making tracks on a specially created rink set atop Finland's arctic icepack. To get there, pianist and host Jim Brickman and a hundred skaters, vocalists, musicians, and TV technicians had to travel via icebreaker. The night segments were shot at a magically lit ice castle. The actual soundtrack includes Brickman's descriptions of solstice traditions, and the music performed primarily by Windham Hill artists is accompanied by the sound of skates cutting over the ice. Even without reference to the skating episodes, you'll find a variety of music to fit ...

Even without reference to the skating episodes, you'll find a variety of music to fit the season, including the sparkling and twinkling winter wonderland of "Magic Forest," the sweeping gestures of the L.A Guitar Quartet's "Variations on Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," and George Winston's comic fumbles in the Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts tune, "Skating." If vocals will make your evening bright, then play the second CD which includes mistletoe-ready, contemporary love songs sung by Roberta Flack, Michele Wright, Tuck and Patti, Phil Perry, Jeffrey Osborne, and Peabo Bryson. The Rippingtons add a dance club ambiance with "Black Diamond," while Samite's African thumb piano sparkles brightly in "Esawayo." The French duo, Uman, offer the atmospheric "The White Spirit." This 29-track, 2-disc set has got all the joys of the season -- from atmospheric instrumentals to love songs to carols.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares

Jim Brickman, Tuck & Patti, Samite, George Winston, the Rippingtons, Jeffrey Osborne, and Peabo Bryson contribute tracks to this creative, festive winter celebration.
