Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
A young boy walks home in the rain and imagines he is a humpback whale jumping and diving in the ocean. The beautifully written and imaginative text urges the reader to role-play along with the boy as he pretends to experience a day in the life in the underwater community of whales. Authentic descriptions and illustrations make it an ideal book for introducing pre-primary and primary children to the wonders of ocean life as well as the opportunity for interaction through role playing the behavior of whales. Part of the "Just for a Day" series.
Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
How does it feel to be a whale, to glide up and down between the "two worlds of sea and sky...water and air," or slide, flippers stretched, "as graceful as a bird...through the empty sky?" It feels however youngsters imagine it, after Joanne Ryder guides them through a metamorphosis from human to cetacean and back. Prepare them for the experience with illustrator Michael Rothman's acrylics of the marine habitat, then suggest they close their eyes, relax and listen as you read aloud Ms. Ryder's poetic evocation of a humpback's seasonal sojourn near the Hawaiian Islands. Be prepared with sensational words you can add to their vocabularies when you discuss the vicarious adventure of a Winter Whale.
