Overview

Each year, as days grow shorter and trees become bare, the world outside seems to slow and darken. But for children, this time of year is magical. The frosty air crackles with play and laughter. There’s a sense of excitement as snow and cold weather make for outdoor adventures that aren’t possible any other time of year.
This charming picture book, the latest in National Geographic’s popular Picture the Seasons series, is a vibrant celebration of winter traditions. Winter means family, as loved ones travel many miles to visit. Holiday events bring a spark of warmth and togetherness that seems to happen only in winter. Twinkling lights and colorful displays bring cheer and goodwill. Glowing candles invite visitors to share a festive meal. Frosty weather outside draws lacy patterns on the windowpanes.
With this beautifully photographed book in the home or classroom library, children will return time and again to see, feel, and learn about the magic of winter. An excellent choice for teachers wishing to celebrate the season, as well as for grandparents who seek a meaningful gift for their little ones.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cynthia Levinson
This 16-page photography book displays and describes various aspects of winter around the world with a multicultural cast of children and families. On the cover, a perky, traditional snowman, complete with corncob pipe poking from a red pompom smile, black button eyes, fringed scarf, carrot nose, red gloves on stick arms, and a floppy hat greets readers and leads them to the opening page, on which an Asian child, holding a miniature snowman, asks where he can find a teeny tiny hat. Thereafter, Winter presents its many, varied characteristics in the first person, on same pages overtly and on others, nominally, making for a slightly confusing voice. Winter is both cold and gentle, drawing microscopic lacy patterns on windows and opening to glittering vistas. Winter is stormy and playful, dark yet filled with lights, sneaky and yet a time to celebrate many traditions. The photographs, which are stop-action crisp and glowing, invite readers to examine details and to appreciate panoramic wonderlands. The vocabulary of the poetic narrative ranges from words familiar to young readers, such as "teeny tiny," to ones, such as "astonishing," that will stretch older readers' understanding. Unfortunately, the settings, which include ice skating on a canal, are not identified, even in the back matter. Furthermore, neither the text nor the photographs convey a sub-theme, such as color or shape, which could complement and enrich the winter theme. Reviewer: Cynthia Levinson
