Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Each entry in the "Hello USA" series is similar in format with four narrative sections covering the land, history, people and economy, and the environment. A fifth "All About..." section includes fun and other facts, state song, a recipe, historical timeline, outstanding citizens with pictures and short bios (authors Laura Ingalls Wilder and Marguerite Henry were born here), places to visit, annual events, state wildlife, and an annotated bibliography of well-chosen nonfiction and fiction set in the state. The environmental section focuses primarily on groundwater pollution and measures to help keep water safe. A political map showing the principal cities and national forests faces a physical map of geological regions, elevation and other features. A later map indicates principal products, but it would benefit from being superimposed on a political map so readers see the connections. Separate short sections include ones about the Peshtigo Fire and the checkerboard patterns of multiple immigration waves to the state. Illustrations are well chosen from modern, historical, archival and artistic sources. All in all, this is a useful, specific, varied and well-organized introduction to the state and one that will assist report writers, would-be tourists, or the merely curious equally well. Endmatter includes web sites, a glossary and proper names pronunciation guide, and an index. 2002, Lerner Publications, $25.26 and $6.95. Ages 9 to 14. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-- A concise overview of Wisconsin's geography, history, and people. The small size and many full-color photographs, drawings, and maps make it easy to pick up and use. The information parallels entries found in most encyclopedias, and is no more in-depth. A pronunciation guide and sections presenting facts at a glance and biographical sketches of famous Wisconsinites round out the narrative. A very limited historical timeline covers the period from 10,000 b.c. when Native Americans began moving into the state, to 1946, when Joseph McCarthy was elected to the U. S. Senate. A final chapter on protecting the environment lends to the text's timeliness. Allan Carpenter's Wisconsin (1978) is more attractive and more challenging than this volume, and Dennis Fradin's Wisconsin in Words and Pictures (1977, both Childrens) is a bit more lively. A serviceable, but far from outstanding, offering. --Anna DeWind, Milwaukee Public Library

    books for grandsons

For their birthdays and Christmas we get the boys books on different states. It is helping them learn about the various states and I have fun reading and discussing the states with them. We as grandparents are in part helping the boys develop a love of reading and learning at same time.
