Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Rinpoche (1904-87) was a Tibetan lama and wisdom teacher of the Nyingma school, the oldest of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions, founded in the eighth century. He studied in Tibet under a number of prominent lamas but left in 1958, living first in India and then Nepal. He founded many Buddhist teaching centers in those countries and later in France and the United States, but his work has not been widely translated into English. This translation of his teachings is selected from a 25-volume set of collected works, first published in Tibetan in 1978. Garry presents translations without commentary but places each chapter in context with an introduction. He writes as both a translator and a devotee (he has a Ph.D. in Indo-Tibetan Budhism), and this mixing of scholarship and laudatory praise can be distracting. The teachings are filled with flowery language and Tibetan cultural allusions and language terms that might be best appreciated by readers with an established background in Tibetan studies. Two appendixes explain Buddhist concepts key to the text; a notes section adds additional clarification. A more clearly presented biographical introduction to Dudjom's life would have been beneficial. Recommended for academic collections.-Jerry Shuttle, East Tennessee State Univ.
