Editorial Reviews

VOYA
AGERANGE: Ages 11 to 15.

Matlock, the president of WisdomWorks Ministries, has worked with youth pastors and students for nearly twenty years. These brief books offer practical advice on a variety of topics. Aimed at a very specific audience, they are designed to help youth apply biblical wisdom to everyday events and decision-making processes. Friends, Dating, and Relationships offers concrete advice on how to choose true friends, how to deal with loneliness, and qualities to look for in a long-term relationship. Making Good Decisions gives solid but fairly standard advice on how to make good choices. These works' strong moral center is drawn from the guiding principles of the Christian Bible, with a specific focus on the proverbs of this work. In addition to scripture, the author offers his own real-life experience that humanizes the works in an entertaining and appealing way. Along with the advice, each book offers case studies and interactive activities that allow readers to practice what they have learned through realistic situations. These activities are the strength of this series, offering a chance for reflection and providing a great opportunity for discussion with religious youth groups. Overall the series books are fast, practical reads with average quality text that is often overwhelmed by its pretentious, matter-of-fact tone. It is clear that the “Wisdom On…” series will appeal to a very limited audience of readers who are looking for self-help books with a strong moral framework. With volumes on time and money and movies, music, and television forthcoming, the series fills a niche for Christian teen nonfiction. Reviewer: Rachel Wadham
