Overview

Meg Finn is in trouble. Cast out of her home by her stepfather after her mom's death, Meg is a wanderer, a troublemaker. But after her latest stunt, finding a place to sleep is the least of her worries. Belch, Meg's partner in crime, has gotten her involved in the attempted robbery of an elderly man, Lowrie McCall. But things go horribly wrong. After an accidental explosion, Meg's spirit is flung into limbo, and a race begins between the demonic and the divine to win Meg's soul. Meg's really not a bad kid, but she hasn't exactly been an angel either, so the tally of her good and evil deeds is dead even. Her only chance of tipping the scales to salvation is to go back to Earth and do good -- specifically, to help Lowrie McCall. He's got many regrets in his life to set right -- a "wish list" -- and not much time left to do it. But even if Meg can persuade Lowrie to get mixed up with her, she's going to have to deal with an even scarier, undead Belch -- who's now definitely on the side of the Devil. A wild journey to the unexpected hereafter, The Wish List is a heartwarming tale of a young girl's last chance, and the love she will need to -- quite literally -- redeem herself.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
The Irish author who created the criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl returns with this heavenly, stand-alone book about a girl out to save her eternal soul. With his knack for suspenseful plot twists and intriguing characters, Eoin Colfer tells the spirited tale of young Meg Finn, a girl who is accidentally killed by her partner-in-crime during a burglary. Fortunately for Meg's soul, one last-minute act of kindness rescues her from being sent through the tunnel directly to hell; after winding up in limbo instead, the girl's spirit returns to earth in the hope of eventually going through "the Pearlies." To make the heavenly cut, Meg goes to the aid of the elderly Lowrie McCall, a down-and-out bloke who has four wishes on his list before he dies. Sound simple? It would be, but the trouble is, the bad boy downstairs has an eye out for Meg's soul, too, and he's sent a "Soul Man" -- a vicious dog-boy creature, who happens to be Meg's deceased murderer -- to retrieve it. Colfer's energetic romp through heaven, hell, and all Irish points in between is a blissful trip. Even though The Wish List doesn't have the in-depth, magical, hi-tech lingo that the Artemis books are known for, it does have its share of cool gadgets and otherworldly hijinks that will keep fans turning pages. A quick read that'll just keep you thirsty for more from Colfer. Matt Warner
Publishers Weekly
"The author of Artemis Fowl turns his keen wit to the afterlife in this darkly humorous tale," wrote PW in a starred review of this novel, about an Irish girl who embarks on a journey to help the man she tried to rob before she was killed in an explosion. Ages 10-up. (July) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
KLIATT
To quote from the review of the hardcover in KLIATT, January 2004: When a nasty teenage boy named Belch and his even nastier dog Raptor involve 14-year-old Meg in the attempted robbery of an old man, an unexpected explosion occurs. Meg, Belch, and Raptor are blown up and their souls are flung out of their bodies. Belch and Raptor somehow meld into one creature and wind up as a minion of Satan, but Meg's soul ends up in limbo, with Saint Peter and the Devil vying for it. Meg is given a last chance at salvation: she is sent back to Earth to help the man she had tried to rob. Old Lowrie McCall knows he will die soon, and he has a wish list of regrets to set straight. Meg tries to help him, but Belch (now with many comically doglike qualities) has been sent back to Earth to make sure she fails. Where will Meg's soul finally end up? Fast, funny, and irreverent, this is a clever and thought-provoking novel by the Irish author of the wildly popular Artemis Fowl series. It's full of action (though when people inhabit each other's bodies it can be a bit confusing), and the moral issues raised make this more than just an amusing fantasy/adventure tale. Sure to be popular. KLIATT Codes: JS*—Exceptional book, recommended for junior and senior high school students. 2000, Scholastic, 252p., Ages 12 to 18.

Gr 7 Up-Meg, kicked out of her house by her stepfather after her mother dies, becomes a troublemaker. When she and her friend Belch attempt to rob Lowrie McCall, an elderly neighbor, a nearby gas tank inadvertently explodes and she finds herself in a tunnel, hurtling toward the beyond. Meanwhile, Saint Peter and Beelzebub argue over Meg's soul-she is not really a bad kid but neither is she a very good one. In order to decide her fate, they send her back to Earth, where she must try to patch things up with Lowrie. After a rough beginning, she and the dying man embark on a quest to help him right the mistakes that he made during his life. Their adventures are both humorous and poignant, as Lowrie confronts his regrets and Meg strives to attain salvation. Whether the events are set in Ireland or in a hereafter complete with computer technology, Colfer concocts a delightful novel that is written in a much lighter vein than his "Artemis Fowl" books (Hyperion). He brings together several unforgettable characters, including an irascible old man, a mouthy heroine, and a malevolent spirit that attempts to stop Meg from completing her mission. The interaction of the heavenly-and not so heavenly-beings adds an unexpected dimension to the novel. An entertaining and compelling read.-Janet Hilbun, formerly at Sam Houston Middle School, Garland, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
An abused teen and a bitter old man find affection and redemption in this heartwarming . . . slapstick comedy? A bungled robbery leaves Meg and her pathetic partner Belch dead. Belch goes straight to hell, but Meg dies perfectly balanced between good and evil. She's given one last chance to save her soul by bringing some meaning to the last days of her intended victim, crotchety old-timer Lowrie. Soppy, perhaps, but for the humor of Lowrie's delinquent tasks for Meg, from trespassing to fisticuffs. Helping Lowrie won't do Meg much good if each of her good deeds moves her a little bit closer to hell. And Belch, more moronic than ever, has been sent back by Beelzebub to guarantee her failure. Worse, the temptation to use her reprieve for some late vengeance against her abusive stepfather might overwhelm Meg's mission. A lightweight and moving chuckler. (Fiction. 11-14)

Good To Know

Some fun and fascinating outtakes from our interview with Colfer:

"My original ambition was to be a comic book artist. I would still love to write a comic one day."

"I have four brothers and they are the inspiration for several of the sprites and gremlins in my books."

"I did a parachute jump recently and loved it. I would definitely take it up as a hobby if we had more clear sky over here in Ireland."

    I Also Recommend:

    I LOVED this book!

I love all of Mr. Colfer's books, but this may have been my favorite! I really liked the plot--it was simple and easy, yet fun and exciting, and I like the way the story turned out, and the realism behind it. It was very funny, and the characters were believable, and I would definitely read it again!

    Great Book

Eion Colfer, The Wish List is a bittersweet book about doing the right thing for people that like fantasy.

The wish list takes place in a town called Dublin. The main character is Meg Finn in Eion Colfer's, The Wish List. Meg Finn is a ghost after a gas tank explosion. She wasn't good enough to go to heaven but wasn't bad enough to go to hell. Meg goes back to the real world as a ghost and tries to make herself a better person. Meg helps an old guy named Lowrie McCall that she tried to rob when she was alive. Will Meg make it to heaven or will she go to hell or maybe she will do absolutely nothing and stay in the middle?
Eion Colfer's readers from all around will love the wish list because of its amazing parts about respect, love, and life.

    Amazing read

This book is easily my second favorite book. Colfer pulls readers in with a unique plot. The first scene is a litttle intense. I would recommend this book to people who like a bitter sweet ending.

    A reviewer

Out of all my favorite books, The Wish List is my favorite. This book has lots of action, humor, and very inspirational. Eoin Colfer is the writter of this book, and also has written a very famous series called the Artemis Fowl series. It also has lots of interesting characters within the book. It starts out having Megan ( the main character) breaking into a house. At first glance, she looks like a evil person, but she tries to save the old man her partner's dog bit. So she is also good. She dies and is sent back to Earth because she is too good for hell and too bad for heaven. She is a humorous character always messing with the old man, but has a kind heart. She really makes you want to turn the page because of her amazing character. The bad kid and his dog gets morphed together, and are pure evil. They are also very stupid, they have many chances to stop Megan, but they fail all the time. They also take advantage of their new powers to hurt people and suck their life out of them. They are really evil and stupid, and makes you want to see how they screw up next time. Lowrie is the person Megan must help. He is depressed that he has only a few weeks to live, and is depressed in that he made so many mistakes in his life and wants to do it right with the help of Megan. You really feel sorry for him and want to have him cheer up. He is also a great kind person with funny remarks. In the end, The Wish List has many great characters and a great storyline, and is a great page turner. This book is one of the best Eoin books and I really recommend this book, but be aware that it talks about heaven and hell just in case you don't believe in such places. Alex Arroyo

    READ THIS BOOK!

This book is totally great! It is hilarious. It is about Meg, who ran away from her abusive stepfather. To get money, she joined a teen robber, Belch. In an attempt to rob Lowrie McCall, Meg chickens out and Belch kills them both. Belch goes to hell quickly, but Meg's life was a dead balance between good and evil. To tip the scale, they send her back to earth to help Lowrie with his wish list. Satan, not wanting to lose her soul, sends Belch back to mess her up.

    The Wish List review

The Wish List At the start of this book, a teen-aged girl named Meg had done many bad things in her life, not just little things, but big things. When she and a kid named Belch brake into the old man Lowrie¿s house, they both get killed in an explosion Belch accidentally made. As a soul Meg goes to neither heaven nor hell, but takes the road in-between to fix her last and final mistake. Lowrie's life was also a disaster, but not because he was bad, but because he made some bad choices. On a list he writes these things down and circles 3 that can be done still. These are: Kissing a girl named Sissy who eventually became a star. Kicking a ball over soccer net, because he didn¿t take the chance that he could. Punching a man named Brendan Ball, who humiliated him terribly. Lastly, spitting over the cliffs of Moher, since his dad used to sing a lullaby, and it was one of his dreams to do it. After all of the twists and turns, and even a wish being replaced, this was a good book. I think this book was a good book it was exciting to read because there was action and a tiny bit of mystery. There were exciting flashbacks that told stories I was waiting to hear. Also, Meg seemed like she had the personality of a person her age, though the things she did seem a little unreal. Lowrie was pretty cranky like most seniors are, but not too much. I do think the main conflict was strange to me though the tasks on the wish list weren¿t too much of disasters. The ending was a pure page-turner, I couldn¿t wait to finish. I kept wondering what the outcome of the last task, spitting over the cliffs of Moher, would be. I ended up enjoying this book, though some of it was weird. The author, Eoin Colfer, has an interesting voice most of the character talk a little like sarcastic teen-agers. Older people are also called ¿Old fossils.¿ I¿m not used to books like this, but it was still a thriller. Also, he used many forms of characterization, and this book isn¿t just paragraph after paragraph of description either. Though this book doesn¿t have a big vocabulary, it still had words I didn¿t know. I would rate this book an 8/10! Though there are strange parts, I enjoyed the humor, and the plotline. Not every book can get that 10/10, but this comes pretty close. Finally, this book is high on my charts. I think you should read this book, and other Eoin Colfer books because the books have a kid flare to them and the plotlines fit together well. Anything can happen in The Wish List¿s magical spirit world.

    Second Chance

¿The rusted metal collapsed under the minuscule onslaught, allowing the white-hot sphere access to highly flammable gas ¿ BOOM! Meg Finn¿s soul was knocked clean out of her skin.¿ If you knew the horrible things Meg Finn had done in her lifetime, you might think that she deserves this atrocious fate. In Eoin Colfer¿s The Wish List, an acrimonious yet witty tale of an errant teenager, Meg Finn is on her way to hell ¿ literally. At the onset of the story, Meg Finn is helping a neighborhood delinquent, Belch Brennan, break into a grumpy, old man¿s apartment. We see, however, that there might be another side to the wayward Meg Finn. At the last minute, she has second thoughts and attempts to help the old man and escape. Belch, however, would die rather than let Meg get away ¿ and he does. The next thing Meg remembers is speeding along a vast tunnel that splits in two directions ¿ one heading up to an exceptionally pearly gateway, and the other down to fiery damnation. Can Meg save her soul from the demonic creatures of hell? Colfer has combined an interesting plot, black humor, and fast-paced action to mold this gritty yet thirst-quenching read. He offers a cynically funny view of the afterlife without being offensively profane, and his wisecracks get you chuckling out loud. Despite the fact that it is a quick read, the story has a deep message of morality engraved into its pages. The Wish List is a tale of the divine and devilish that is perfect for anyone who takes pleasure in a few wisecracks and enjoys reading for fun rather than for a challenge. This book is mostly recommended for teenagers although, some good-humored adults might also appreciate it. Colfer emphasizes the dilemmas that are involved in being a teenager and explores the regrets and feelings of loneliness and despair that are related to growing old. Special bonds form between and connect these feelings, despite the fact that they belong to different ages, and it is these qualities that make The Wish List one story that you won¿t regret reading.
