Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Toot and Puddle and Puddle's cousin, Opal, join forces again in Wish You Were Here by Holly Hobbie. After a few weeks of travel, Toot returns to Woodcock Pocket looking a bit "bluish." But with some coddling and bathing and a brew of stinky mushrooms, Toot is restored to his lovely pink. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Toot, Puddle, and Opal are back for another endearing tale. While Toot, the adventurer, is off to Wildest Borneo to seek exotic plants, Puddle's cousin, Opal, comes to keep Puddle company. As a series of post cards arrives from Borneo, Opal works with Puddle to improve their garden at home. Toot reports discovering "the imperial quaking spicepod" and being stung by a "fierce banded bush bee." When he arrives home, Puddle and Opal are distressed to see that the bite has turned him blue. Nothing seems to cure him. Finally, on the World Wide Web, Opal finds a possible remedy. Bad smelling and tasting as it is, the concoction brings back Toot's normal color. And no wild adventure was necessary; they find the necessary mushroom right near home. There is a humorous innocence to the watercolor scenes and vignettes, in the jungle and at home in Woodcock Pocket. Those in the jungle are filled with details of the lush foliage of Borneo, while the office of Dr. Ha Song, local Chinese herbalist, is crowded with Chinese artifacts. The anthropomorphic pigs are as appealing as ever. 2005, Little Brown and Company, Ages 4 to 8.

PreS-Gr 3-Fast friends Toot and Puddle, along with cousin Opal, are off on another delightful adventure. Toot travels to "Wildest Borneo" to hunt down exotic plants, sending home his customary, amusing postcards, which Puddle and Opal enjoy while they work on their garden in Woodcock Pocket. Unfortunately, Toot is stung by a bee and develops an alarming case of "the violet virus." He turns a disturbing shade of blue, and his friends do their best to take care of him when he returns home. While researching the disease on the World Wide Web, Opal learns that a mushroom that grows under "very, very old bushes blooming with purple flowers" might cure him. She locates the rare fungus under some nearby ancient lilacs and Puddle brews a restorative tea for their ailing friend. Once Toot regains his pink complexion and is fully recovered, he decides to confine his explorations to "Wildest Woodcock Pocket." The lovely watercolors sparkle with spring sunshine. The pigs' endearingly expressive faces, which convey myriad emotions, add much humor to the story. Fans will line up to check out this tale.-Linda L. Kirkus Reviews
Toot is bitten by more than the travel bug in this addition to the series. This time the little globetrotter is off to the jungles of Borneo, and Opal comes to keep Puddle company at Woodcock Pocket. As his travels proceed, Toot sends postcards of his adventures with exotic flora, like the "imperial quaking spice pod." This contrasts with Puddle's marigolds and zinnias back home. Before long Toot is stung by a "fierce banded bush bee" and given a case of the "violet virus." He arrives home periwinkle-colored and queasy. His friends, in searching for a cure, try everything from eastern and western medicine to positive thinking. They discover that the only cure is a mushroom called the "purple slimecap stinkhorn," which is definitely stinky, but definitely works. It's a bit of a concern that the antidote is a mushroom, something which children are always being warned against eating unauthorized. The story, however, is clever and as in all the Toot and Puddle books, friendship reigns supreme. Hobbie has once again illustrated her story with exquisite attention to detail in her peerless watercolors. (Picture book. 3-7)
