Three girls, three trips, one amazing summer!

Liza Gold's biggest nightmare: a cross-country road trip with her parents and two other crazy families; visiting sights like the world's largest ketchup bottle; two whole months away from her best friends, Sam and Mina. And it's all coming true.

Liza is convinced that this will be the worst summer ever. But this is one trip that just might surprise her. . . .

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Wheatley
Liza has it all planned out: she will become a CIT (counselor in training) or hang out at the pool the whole summer, but her plans must change when her parents inform her of the Great Gold Family Vacation. This vacation entails taking in sights like the World's Largest Catsup Bottle and the World's Largest van Gogh Painting by flying to Chicago and renting a car to drive for two whole months across the real America all the way to California. But this was not just any family trip. The Golds will be joined by the CRAWL families (Champions of Real America and its Wonderlands) with whom they had traveled when Liza was younger. These are the Kaplan-Novaks, two professors and their two daughters; and Mr. and Mrs. Schweber and their son Caleb. Liza, who is not looking forward to spending the summer with these two crazy families is surprised when Caleb's cute fourteen-year-old cousin, Jake, steps out of the car. Things don't always go Liza's way, though, since Liza is stuck with strange Dillie, who looks forward to visiting Roswell, New Mexico, since she is mesmerized by aliens, and Caleb, who looks like he did at age eight—a smaller and less cute version of Harry Potter. Each chapter begins with Liza listing the location, population, miles driven, and the days of torment in a journal format. Liza finds that although the summer was nothing like she had planned, she goes home with many good memories. This is a great summer read for the tween group, who will relate to the humor, adventures and mishaps, and Liza's feelings throughout the book. It is a part of the "Candy Apple Summer Trilogy" series. Reviewer: Barbara Wheatley
