Overview

Jude Deveraux captures love’s magic in this heartwarming novel about desires that are unexpectedly fulfilled.

Jace Montgomery was a stranger in Chandler, Colorado. Tall, proud, and rugged, he would make any woman’s heart beat faster—even shy, sweet Nellie Grayson’s. Nellie, who has always been pleasantly plump, worked tirelessly to help her beautiful younger sister, Terel, to become the belle of the town. But it is Nellie who catches Jace’s eye. For the first time, she is the center of a man’s attention. And with their first kiss, Nellie finds herself falling helplessly, unexpectedly in love.

But with her newfound joy comes the certainty that Jace will, sooner or later, be won over by Terel’s charms. With the help of an enchanting new friend, Nellie discovers that her flirtatious sister might not be the woman for handsome Jace Montgomery after all….

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Deveraux's ( A Knight in Shining Armor ) latest romance is a slight but amusing fantasy . Berni, a selfish woman of the 1980s (painted initially in strokes so broad as to approach caricature), awakens from her death swoon to find herself in an all-female limbo called the Kitchen--so named because, as in marriage, it's where women who think they're going to heaven often wind up instead. To earn points toward paradise, Berni must work a Cinderella miracle for Nellie, an unappreciated young woman living in Colorado at the turn of the century. After bungling her first attempts at fairy-godmothering at arm's length, Berni comes down to earth, directly meddling in Nellie's affairs with greater success. Deveraux's characterizations are, to put it mildly, sketchy: Nellie is almost too good--and certainly too dumb--to be true, while her wicked sister Terel is so self-centered, petty and cruel as to hardly be believable. In the end, of course, love conquers all: Nellie gets her man and Berni her chance to move on to the next level of purgatory. Deveraux fans will find her treading familiar ground with verve if little subtlety. One million first printing. (Nov.)

Biography

Jude Deveraux was born in Fairdale, Kentucky, the eldest of a family of three girls and one boy. After earning a degree in art from Murray State University and studying teaching at the University of New Mexico, she taught fifth grade in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She left when her first book, The Land of Enchantment, was accepted for publication by Avon books.

Jude's first books were historical, chiefly featuring the Montgomery and Taggert families. Stories of the lives and loves of these families spanned over several centuries in the US and England. They are filled with details of the history and culture of the time periods and settings of her novels. Her more recent series of books focuses on the McTern family and its descendants. The novels are set in the fictional town of Edilean, Virginia, and go from when the family arrived in America to contemporary time.

Jude's exhaustive research on every aspect of her books has made for a rich and detailed background for each of her novels. Her stories are adventurous, funny, and at times heartwarming. Jude has had over thirty books on the New York Times Bestsellers List, over 60 million copies in print, and has been translated into 18 languages.

Jude has lived in England and Egypt as well as in several American states, and she has traveled around the world. She likes to read nonfiction and murder mysteries, work in her garden, and in boxing class, she enjoys showing much younger males that she can throw a mean right cross.

    Cute :)

Wishes, by Jude Deveraux, is an excellent book that allocates many types of emotions. It begins with the funeral of a wealthy woman named Berni. Berni is a selfish, arrogant and conceited person with two things on her mind: money and beauty. While on Earth she lives off the money of the rich men she marries. She spends money to look young at the expense of others. Because of this lifestyle, she becomes a selfish, self-centered person. Her lack of consideration, kindness and compassion during her life on Earth, lands Berni in the "kitchen" once she dies. The "kitchen" is a place in between heaven and hell. Her job here is to help a woman named Nellie Grayson find happiness. If Berni can do this, she is one step closer to being taken to heaven. However, if she makes Nellie's life worse, she is one step closer to hell. Nellie is a woman in her early 30's that is living on Earth while Berni is in the kitchen. Nellie is overweight and overlooked by her father and sister as a mere disappointment. Nellie is kind and helpful, and also very beautiful, yet because she is overweight she is never truly seen as anything other than a servant. At first Berni overlooks her like everyone else. She thinks that Nellie is ugly and useless. In order to complete her task she grants Nellie three wishes in which Nellie may wish whatever she truly desires. Nellie makes her three wishes, all of which are for the benefit of others. The wishes backfire on Nellie, making her life worse. While the book progresses, we begin to see Berni's character change. Berni starts to look at Nellie as a person with feelings and soon understands that Nellie is a good person that deserves a good life. Berni sees that Nellie becomes happy when someone falls in love with her and she falls in love with him. This man's name is Jace Montgomery, he is a person all women would want to date and marry. Throughout the book there are some springs with their relationship. The springs are caused by the wishes granted by Berni. With Berni truly wanting to help Nellie make a happy life, she reverses the hurt she has caused and helps sort out Nellie and Jace's problems. Jace and Nellie are angry with each other and it will take exact planning to make things right. Overall, Wishes is a wonderfully written, flowing, easy to read book that allows you to understand the real meaning of life, happiness, love, and friendship. I recommend this book highly to anyone who likes romance, and witty story lines.

    My FAVORITE Jude Deveraux book!

This book is just so charming, with a fragile heroine that's not usually seen in romance novels. I adore the Montgomery family, and do wish Ms. Deveraux would start writing about them again. I have given this book as a gift to many people, hoping to share it. I'm glad it's back in print!

    Cute but why??

This had a good story to it but why would Jude Deveraux allow such a ending??? Why did she give those cruel people a happy ending?? And she made Nellie so weak that she can't even decide things for herself. I did enjoy the story but Nellie's character disappointed me.

    Great Story

You have to love Nellie and understand why she eats so much. Her younger sister was such an evil character that I found myself calling my little sister to tell her I love her.

    I Also Recommend:

    Amazingly Rich

This novel is what got me hooked upon reading. Jude Deveraux is still my number one favorite author, and any of her historical romance novels with the Montgomery or Taggert families are amazing!
This novel has originality, uniqueness, and the ever-lasting romantic touch that keeps romance fanatics writhing for more. Her way of tying two stories and two peoples struggles into one read adds to the overall effectiveness this love story ignites.
This novel for me was a praise because, unlike most romance novels, the main character is not a skinny, perfect little spring chicken; but instead a healthy, loving, realistic woman, to whom I believe more woman can relate to.
I give this novel 5 stars for all categories, and recommend it to all the romantic ladies out there...Enjoy!

This best was one of my favorites

this book was so great i liked the thought of Jace not caring how Nellie looked or what people thought about them and all that matter to him was that he loved her. but i hated terel when she was trying to mess up things for her sister but berni came through and made everyone happy. i have been following up with the montgomerys and taggerts for quite a while although i am 13 but all in all i have to give my props to ms.jude deveraux.

    A Cinderella Story

Jude Deveraux is one of my favorite Authors. She writes about romance and adds the right amount of comedy to it. The reader becomes easily drawn into the lives of the people she writes about. She's done it again with, Wishes. She introduces us in a most unusual way to a selfish enchantress named Bernie. Who even though dead, still has an opportunity to redeem herself by doing an act of kindness to someone in need. That would be Nellie. A low esteem, but kindly fat girl who never knew what she was missing, until she meets a Knight in Shining Armor..And oh what a guy! Jace makes you swoon over his sexy yet subtle ways. ummmmmmmmmh yummy...So if you want to read a story that you can cry with, laugh with, and wish with, read wishes. You'll be happy you did.

Still stands after all these years.

This book is still stands after all these years I was just breezing online here and felt that I could say a few nice words about this book. I think this is one of my fondest stories written by the esteemed authoress. Her books are like having a favorite sweater and a cup of hot chocolate on a rainy day. I loved this story because it's Cinderella a few years older.
