Overview

New York Times bestselling author Jude Deveraux captures love’s magic in this heartwarming novel about desires that are unexpectedly fulfilled.

Jace Mongomery was a stranger in Chandler. Tall, proud, and ruggedly handsome, he would make any woman's heart beat faster...

Even shy, sweet Nellie Grayson—Nellie, who thought only of her beautiful younger sister's happiness. With Nellie's tireless aid, Terel Grayson easily became the belle of Chandler, Colorado.

Yet Jace, homesick for his closeknit family in Maine, took immediately to Nellie. For the first time, Nellie was the center of attention. It was a heady, delightful feeling...almost as wonderful as the moment when Jace gave her her very first kiss.

Nellie was sure her romantic idyll would end—how long could Jace resist the lovely Terel's charms? But with the help of an enchanting new friend, Nellie would discover that her flirtatious sister might not be the woman to win the gallant Jace Montgomery....

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Deveraux's ( A Knight in Shining Armor ) latest romance is a slight but amusing fantasy . Berni, a selfish woman of the 1980s (painted initially in strokes so broad as to approach caricature), awakens from her death swoon to find herself in an all-female limbo called the Kitchen--so named because, as in marriage, it's where women who think they're going to heaven often wind up instead. To earn points toward paradise, Berni must work a Cinderella miracle for Nellie, an unappreciated young woman living in Colorado at the turn of the century. After bungling her first attempts at fairy-godmothering at arm's length, Berni comes down to earth, directly meddling in Nellie's affairs with greater success. Deveraux's characterizations are, to put it mildly, sketchy: Nellie is almost too good--and certainly too dumb--to be true, while her wicked sister Terel is so self-centered, petty and cruel as to hardly be believable. In the end, of course, love conquers all: Nellie gets her man and Berni her chance to move on to the next level of purgatory. Deveraux fans will find her treading familiar ground with verve if little subtlety. One million first printing. (Nov.)

I have read almost all of Jude Deverauxs books; and this is my favorite. I can read this book over and over. This books hits very close to home for me; and I loved the way she used a none steroe type heroine for this book.

I have been a JD fan for the past 20 years! I find that I revisit several of my favorite series time and again (Velvet Promise...). This is the first time that I read Wishes. I really love this book. At times, it was painful to read the things that Nellie experienced. But Jace made it all worthwhile. I like to Montgomery in Maine, so a great story line to read up on.

This is the book that started me down the path of being a loyal Jude Deveraux fan. I have read it many times over the past 15 years and each time is a new experience. The whimsical nature of the story enchants me differently each time I read it. I think anyone who would like a fairy godmother or just a few wishes will enjoy reading this book.

This novel is what got me hooked upon reading. Jude Deveraux is still my number one favorite author, and any of her historical romance novels with the Montgomery or Taggert families are amazing!
This novel has originality, uniqueness, and the ever-lasting romantic touch that keeps romance fanatics writhing for more. Her way of tying two stories and two peoples struggles into one read adds to the overall effectiveness this love story ignites.
This novel for me was a praise because, unlike most romance novels, the main character is not a skinny, perfect little spring chicken; but instead a healthy, loving, realistic woman, to whom I believe more woman can relate to.
I give this novel 5 stars for all categories, and recommend it to all the romantic ladies out there...Enjoy!

((Yeah.)) Turned his ears forward. He walked closer to the mares. "I dont know... I spent two years on my own. I stayed in many forests. It's really dangerous. But we are a herd, and we need to keep moving. Let's just keep it at a steady trot." He neighed, walking slowly into the forest.
