Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Deveraux's ( A Knight in Shining Armor ) latest romance is a slight but amusing fantasy . Berni, a selfish woman of the 1980s (painted initially in strokes so broad as to approach caricature), awakens from her death swoon to find herself in an all-female limbo called the Kitchen--so named because, as in marriage, it's where women who think they're going to heaven often wind up instead. To earn points toward paradise, Berni must work a Cinderella miracle for Nellie, an unappreciated young woman living in Colorado at the turn of the century. After bungling her first attempts at fairy-godmothering at arm's length, Berni comes down to earth, directly meddling in Nellie's affairs with greater success. Deveraux's characterizations are, to put it mildly, sketchy: Nellie is almost too good--and certainly too dumb--to be true, while her wicked sister Terel is so self-centered, petty and cruel as to hardly be believable. In the end, of course, love conquers all: Nellie gets her man and Berni her chance to move on to the next level of purgatory. Deveraux fans will find her treading familiar ground with verve if little subtlety. One million first printing. (Nov.)

Jude Deveraux

Jude Deveraux is the author of more than forty New York Times bestsellers, including Moonlight in the Morning, The Scent of Jasmine, Scarlet Nights, Days of Gold, Lavender Morning, Return to Summerhouse, and Secrets. To date, there are more than sixty million copies of her books in print worldwide. To learn more, visit JudeDeveraux.com.

Biography

Jude Deveraux was born in Fairdale, Kentucky, the eldest of a family of three girls and one boy. After earning a degree in art from Murray State University and studying teaching at the University of New Mexico, she taught fifth grade in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She left when her first book, The Land of Enchantment, was accepted for publication by Avon books.

Jude's first books were historical, chiefly featuring the Montgomery and Taggert families. Stories of the lives and loves of these families spanned over several centuries in the US and England. They are filled with details of the history and culture of the time periods and settings of her novels. Her more recent series of books focuses on the McTern family and its descendants. The novels are set in the fictional town of Edilean, Virginia, and go from when the family arrived in America to contemporary time.

Jude's exhaustive research on every aspect of her books has made for a rich and detailed background for each of her novels. Her stories are adventurous, funny, and at times heartwarming. Jude has had over thirty books on the New York Times Bestsellers List, over 60 million copies in print, and has been translated into 18 languages.

Jude has lived in England and Egypt as well as in several American states, and she has traveled around the world. She likes to read nonfiction and murder mysteries, work in her garden, and in boxing class, she enjoys showing much younger males that she can throw a mean right cross.

Good To Know

Deveraux began her career as a fifth-grade teacher.

Our camp was at see but everyone else thought it was sea so they went there and a leader arose . Blackstar. Pretty soon i had rpers come and vote on who stayed leader . I won and my small clan took over the huge cland and now Blackclaw was the deputies deputy. I was gone for winter break and it just locked our ckan our. Then i moved to Horseckan. I met Spotpelt and Shadowstar abonded me i mated Spotpelt . I had a she kit name Nightpelt in memory of her uncle. Spotpelt mated Rockfall and they had a kit name Rosekit . Spotpelt and Rockfall died soon after so Featherwhisker took her and a tom named Lightningkit in. They vowed to marry each other. Then a prophcey said that a star struck by lighting guided by a rose in a brook would lead the clan. Rosepaw got her warrior name RosePEATAL and Lightingpaw got Lightningspot . Highly Recommended!!!

This is the book that started me down the path of being a loyal Jude Deveraux fan. I have read it many times over the past 15 years and each time is a new experience. The whimsical nature of the story enchants me differently each time I read it. I think anyone who would like a fairy godmother or just a few wishes will enjoy reading this book.

    Not my favorite

The idea was a good one i just couldn't stand how totaly terrible the sister was. Just too hateful, not an enjoyable story to read. I've enjoyed many other JD books much more than this one. It was nice to see old characters still around and having their kids and watching their families grow up! I loved Maddie & Ring, they are Mom & Dad to Jace! Loved that!!!
