Overview

The earnest Richie Havens of Woodstock has turned into a mellower, wiser man and a very spiritual individual -- which infuses his music with a wonderful depth. "The Well," the album's opening track, is a prime example, a small path toward truth and love. But love in all its forms is the central idea of the album -- even down to one of the covers, a glowing, laid-back version of Gary Wright's '70s FM staple "Love Is Alive" that's enough to make you forget the original (now if he could only manage the same for "Dream Weaver"). But his individual stamp is unmistakable, whether on his own songs, which make up the majority of the disc, or his covers -- his take on Pink Floyd's "On the Turning Away," remaking it as an Indian meditation, is nothing less than inspired. But inspiration runs deep throughout Wishing Well. It's a walk through a blooming garden of the mind and heart.

Just a short recommendation for this fine new CD. I especially like Handouts in the Rain which I heard Richie sing at a concert in Austin TX. (And my copy is autographed!) The first time I heard him was in 1965 at a coffeehouse in Springfield MA where he sang Handsome Johnny, another of my favorites. Richie Havens just gets better all the time. If you're a Richie Havens fan, you'll enjoy this CD.

Those of you who have listened to Richie Havens for many years will be thriled with this recording. It has all the energy, emotion and soul that you could ask for. There are a number of terrific new songs that Richie has written (unusual for him as he mainly does covers of other peoples music). The songs he does cover are also wonderful. The backing instrumentation does not overpower Richie or syrup up the recordings as some of his previous records. This is one of the great folk albums ever. It represents years of growth and developement by someone who had already firmly established himself for the past 40 years. Buy it.
