Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Jennifer Rummel
The authors desire this book to describe a way in which teens can relate to an "antidote to the streams of negative images young people receive every day." To achieve their goal, the authors divide the book into eighty short chapters, each containing one thought and matching it with a quote to jumpstart an area of potential improvement. Chapter titles include "Wait a Minute," "Go for It," "Attend to the Details," and "Get the Big Picture." Then the book describes the idea and gives reader exercises to examine how their lives fit into the ideals and how to change if necessary. Each chapter ends with exercises to discover more about oneself as an individual. There is no order to the chapters, quotes are sometimes repeated, and contradictory points pepper the pages. This book, however, identifies a need for self-awareness and shows the reader ways to go about finding that answer. It would make a great graduation gift for high school students or eighth graders and would also serve as a learning tool for English classes or a self-help book for teens. It makes one think critically about one's self and one's place in the world.
