Overview

Holly Cathers’s world shatters when her parents are killed in a rafting accident. She is wrenched from her home in San Francisco and sent to Seattle to live with her aunt, Marie-Claire, and her twin cousins, Amanda and Nicole.

But sorrow and grief soon give way to bewildered fascination as one by one, strange incidents begin to occur. Such as the fact that any desire Holly whispers to her cat seems to come true. Or the fact that a beloved friend is injured after a freak attack from a vicious falcon. Or the fact of an undeniably magnetic and familiar attraction to a boy Holly barely knows.

Holly, Amanda, and Nicole are about to be launched into a dark legacy of secrets, alliances, and machinations, where ancient magics yield dangerous results, where possession is commonplace, and where reincarnation is taken for granted—and the three girls must take on roles in an intergenerational feud the like of which they could never have imagined.…

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—There is something unnatural about the tragic river rafting accident in which 17-year-old Holly Cathers lost her parents and best friend. Being forced to live with her Aunt Marie-Claire and twin cousins Nicole and Amanda in Seattle is not how Holly planned to spend her senior year in high school. It turns out that Holly has a history going back hundreds of years, and the past is about to catch up with her. Reincarnation, dark witchcraft, and blood sacrifice make for an intriguing story concept. However, the pretentious, stiff, and unbelievably clunky prose is further complicated by overly dramatic dialogue, unnecessary, meandering flashbacks, and the high school play of Romeo and Juliet. All of this lessens the impact of the core story of a supernaturally star-crossed pair of lovers from medieval France, reincarnated in the bodies of two modern teenagers. An earnest performance by Cassandra Morris of Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguié's first title (Simon Pulse, 2008) in the series tries hard to rise above the pitfalls of the story, but falls short.—Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI

This book is captivating to the point where I stayed up until 5 in the morning reading it. I like how it shifts on which point of veiw they are on once in a while so that the reader knows what going on through out the whole story and yet the authors still manage to surprise me at some points. The jumps from to the past from different aspects really helped get me into this book and in clearly explaning the complicated, long, twisted history of the Cahors and Deveraux. Over all, it was very well written and divided into 3 parts.

This book was good but not outstanding. It was dull and slow at the beginning because I didn't know what they were talking about, but everything was great.

'Witch' is the start of a wonderful new 'Wicked' series co authored by Nancy Holder featuring Holly Cathor, a senior in high-school who does not yet know that she is part of a very old line of very powerful witches. The story unfolds when Holly's parents are killed in a rafting accident and Holly is forced to move to Seattle to live with her aunt and two twin cousins. Through a series of strange incidents and flashbacks we learn that Holly's ancient family has been part of a feud with another demonic line of witches, the Deveraux's, currently lead by Michael along with his two sons. If witches, warlocks, and the supernatural are for you, then you are sure to enjoy this first entry in this series.

this is a good book and it gets you into the beginning of the wicked series. Holly Cathers had just lost her parents and best friend in a rafter accident. trying to deal with the pain, she is sent to live with her aunt in seattle where she discovers she is a witch and descendant of the medieval house of cahors along with her cousins amanda and nicole. she also learns that the cahors enemy michael deveraux is trying to find her in order to kill her. this is a great first book in the series i recommend it!!

dude, i loved this book...it was hard to follow in the beginning, but after you get into mid chapter 3 and 5, it's awesome...and the fact that there is real information in here also kicks, even though the book is fiction!!!

This book is pretty good, I started it yesterday so I am not really that far. It's hard to follow the part in the begining starting on page 14, but when you can follow it, you can't put the book down. I also don't believe in Witch Craft at all, I just like reading books on magic, but it is totally against my law to do magic.
