2004 Hardcover 1st Edition Very Good in Very Good jacket 5.75 X 8.75" pp. 274. h/b 274 pages, condition is very good. This complete history of witchcraft from Ancient Greece to ... the present day charts the rise and development of witchcraft and the modern witchcraft religion of Wicca. This in-depth investigation discovers how the ideas we have about witchcraft took shape thousands of years ago in the myths and religions of the ancient world. It looks at why these ideas were expressed so violently during the era of the witch trials, and reveals how witchcraft has been transformed into one of the most radical and fastest growing religions of our age; a religion of equality and compassion that still has the power to unsettle even the bravest amongst us. With fresh insights and previously unpublished material drawn from the author's doctoral research into the mysticism, magic, and social meaning of Wicca, this is the first book to bring witchcraft fully out of the shadows. *****PLEASE NOTE: This item is shippi Read more Show Less

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Dates, names, events, and lots of statistics fill this slim history of witchcraft. Ruickbie, the founder of the Witchcraft Information Centre & Archive and a doctoral candidate in the sociology of modern witchcraft at Kings College, London, certainly proves he knows the topic. Dividing the book into three parts-"Early European Witchcraft," "Origins of Modern Witchcraft," and "Modern Witchcraft"-he provides plenty of documentation to support his claims. If spells and charms are your interest, you won't find them here. The book is not about the religious aspects of Wicca either; instead, it is a purely historical exploration. At times, the text can be a bit too academic and scattered, but those truly interested in witchcraft and the Wiccan religion may find it appealing. For an alternative, try Lilith McClelland's Out of the Shadows: Myths and Truths of Modern Wicca. For libraries with a large interest in the topic.-Jennifer Kuncken, Williamsburg Regional Lib., VA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
