Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Lawanda Ingles, the appealing 15-year-old heroine of this resonant debut novel, dreams of being the first person in her family to attend college. Ignoring the scarcity of money in Cardin, Ky., she sets out to sell magazines door to door. At the end of the first day she makes her way up the hill to the home of Amos Garland, a recluse who has lived in two abandoned school buses since his traumatic service in WWII 30 years ago sent him home a guilt-wracked alcoholic. Lawanda enters into an unusual friendship with the crusty old man. But when some punks steal Garland's notebook, which contains thoughts about Lawanda that some townspeople interpret as veiled allusions to an improper relationship, Garland is jailed. Lawanda fights for her friend's freedom, enlisting the help of her grandmother Mamaw, an intuitive healer who was excommunicated from her church for claiming she had a vision in which she saw God as a woman. Lawanda also reaches out to Nancy Catherine, Garland's psychically scarred adult daughter who hasn't seen her father since childhood and remembers him only as an abusive alcoholic. Lyon's rich tale of healing, redemption and social responsibility is told from multiple first-person viewpoints, and although the characters' voices often sound alike, their different viewpoints are distinctive. VOYA - Cindy Lombardo
Lyon's mastery of Appalachian vernacular and her ability to lay bare the souls of her characters make this book both a joy and a source of frustration to read. Filled with images of passion, redemption, remembrance, and regret, the story of a young girl's relationship with a Vietnam veteran whose life has been irredeemably scarred by the war makes for thought-provoking and gut-wrenching reading. Each character is impeccably drawn with all his or her eccentricities and flaws intact, and the weaving together of their emotions sweeps the reader along to bear witness to the ultimate collision of their individual realities. Lawanda, intent on raising money for college by selling magazines, ignores her father's warning not to visit Garland, the "bombed-out soldier, a hermit without faith" who lives in two abandoned buses on Cade's Hill. When Lawanda meets Garland for the first time she sets in motion a chain of events that engulf all the members of her family, as well as the local townspeople. Does Garland's growing affection for Lawanda, cryptically recorded in notebooks confiscated by the town jailer when he arrests Garland for drunkenness, stem from some sinister motive? Or is he looking for a way to repent for his actions during the war and immediately afterward? And will Nancy Catherine, Garland's estranged daughter, find the strength to forgive her father for a life blown apart by alcohol and guilt? This is a luminous book that will appeal to a select audience of readers. Older YAs and adults who enjoy a challenging, sophisticated, and complex story will be intrigued by the intensity of these voices from the heart of Appalachia. For readers who make the investment of time and effort, the trip to Cardin is an unforgettable journey. VOYA Codes: 5Q 2P S (Hard to imagine it being better written, For the YA reader with a special interest in the subject, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
School Library Journal
YALawanda Ingle, 15, is determined to go to college and get out of Pine Mountain, but there's no money, so she decides to earn her own way. While trying to sell magazine subscriptions, she meets Garland, an alcoholic veteran who lives in two old school buses crammed with books. They become friends in spite of her family's disapproval, but when Garland's bus is broken into and his journal is recovered by the sheriff, its rambling entries include incriminating descriptions of the innocent Lawanda. Garland is arrested for public drunkenness, but is held for corrupting a minor, and when Lawanda's father finds out, his rage sends him to Garland's buses with a can of kerosene. The girl follows and becomes the unintended victim of the fire. The story is told in the voices of the major characters, including Lawanda, her father, Garland's daughter, and Lawanda's grandmother Mamaw, who had a vision of Jesus as a woman and formed the Little Splinter Creek Church of the Mother Jesus. Mamaw has powerful healing hands but is helpless against Lawanda's burns. The dialogue in this wonderful story is moving, often funny, and always true to life. YAs will find in Lawanda a revealing picture of a young woman struggling to become her own person in the midst of a loving family whose members think they know what's best for her.Molly Connally, Kings Park Library, Fairfax County, VA
